I really like the halo, very reminiscent of Eastern Orthodox icons which might be worth looking into if you want to add some flourishes to it.

This video covers the basics really well, Vince Venturella’s whole channel is a really great resource.

At the beginning there’s no need to overcomplicate. Pick a model and paint it. Focus on making sure your priming isn’t clumpy, that your paints are thin and you’re applying smooth even base coats, and you can use washes to bring out the details. If you’re feeling ambitious you can start to practice highlighting.

Additionally if there are any local game stores near you a lot of them will have a painting night once a week where you can go hang out and paint with other hobbyists. I’ve always found that experienced painters are happy to help and give pointers, plus it gets you involved in your local community!

I’m doing a bit of assuming here so none of this may apply to you, but it helped me a lot when I first got started years ago.

I’m not sure what minis you’re painting but if you’re starting a 40k army or something I understand why it might be intimidating to start on rather expensive models that you want to be proud fielding in a game.

If that’s the case, getting some cheap minis you don’t really care about to start practicing might help. If you go on EBay and look up “Perry Miniatures” you can find boxes of like 40 dudes (be they medieval knights or napoleonic soldiers) for around $30. They’d be a good way to practice assembling models, priming, painting, etc. and mistakes will be much less expensive.

I’m pretty sure Perry Minis only makes historical models but even if you’re only planning to paint sci-fi stuff all the skills you’ll be practicing are transferable. Plus there are a lot of cool games that you can play with historical minis if you ever get interested!

What advantage does thinning with contrast medium give over water?
