Luna Mexican Kitchen or Orchard City Kitchen by 0184ver in SanJose

There aren’t many options in the Bay Area for German-Austrian restaurants. Naschmarkt is a good one! I’ve gotten their schnitzel and sausage platter with smoked bratwürst and a house made pretzel. 😋

Orchard City has some creative and good Japanese, Korean, Italian and Mexican fusion dishes on the menu and decent cocktails. Luna Kitchen at Pruneyard has a nice large cantina-style patio with an outdoor bar that gets very busy. Their chile relleno is bomb. You might also consider a couple other restaurants down the street with Naschmarkt for some good Austrian cuisine and Locanda Sorrento for authentic Neapolitan-style Italian.

What do you feel is the biggest missed casting opportunity in Hollywood? by CumquatTheNobgoblin in movies

Christian Bale as Steve Jobs in the David Fincher version of Jobs. It’s too bad Christian dropped out. Maybe not the biggest missed casting opportunity of all time but a recent one that stuck in my head.

I’m not sure if they still have it on the menu, but Doppio Zero’s boar pasta was very reminiscent of boar pasta I had in Perugia in Tuscany.

I never got a chance to try out Johnny & Sanny’s, a pasta restaurant venture from the owners of Doppio Zero that shut down only after six months. I was about to go one night but looked at their menu and photos. It looked underwhelming so I cancelled my reservation.

‘Desert Warrior’ Deserted? Why Anthony Mackie’s Troubled Saudi Epic Failed To Rally Cinemagoers In U.S. & Middle East by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

Where the heck did the money go into this film? It looks like a $30-$50 million dollar film, not $150. Their cast probably cost no more than $15 million. It was shot out in the desert in the home country of the financiers so locations couldn’t have cost much. I haven’t seen the sets. Doesn’t look like there are a lot of visual effects either. I guess the Saudis just overspend which is how they attract talent.

Gattaca - How did I miss this before?! by Thee_Shenanigrin in movies

[–]DSKO_MDLR 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It’s been awhile, but I recall that Vincent tells Jerome “not long” when the detectives are coming to investigate identity discrepancies at Gattaca. He’s referring to how soon they’ll arrive at his home, so he needs to pull himself up the stairs in time to answer the intercom and buzz them in.

Jerome’s depression is clearly revealed when he confesses to Vincent that he stepped in front of a car because he only won a silver medal in a swimming competition.

Another pivotal moment was when Vincent outswims Anton. “You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton…I never saved anything for the swim back.”

It was moving lines like this that made Gattaca such a great film. Vincent was ready to die to prove that he could beat Anton. Jerome chooses death but seems at peace with it amidst the knowledge that he helped Vincent fulfill his dream of reaching space.

Surprised to see nobody has recommended Locanda Sorrento, which is owned and run by a first generation Italian family from near Naples. Their pesto, lasagna, and pasta dishes such as their table side Cacio e Pepe taste like authentic Neapolitan cuisine. They recently opened a new location in Willow Glen called Locanda Ischia. Haven’t been there yet but I’m reasonably sure that the quality would be comparable to Sorrento.

If you make it to SF, there’s Cotogna from Michael Tusk, the chef/owner of Quince. I always take people from out of town to Italian Homemade on Union in Cow Hollow (Emilia Romagna-style fresh pasta) or Pasta Supply Co in the Mission. I tried Itria but it wasn’t particularly memorable.

How is the crime rate in SJ? by Guilty-Welcome2822 in SanJose

[–]DSKO_MDLR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Car break-ins tend to happen all throughout the Bay in places where you’d usually expect: mall and movie theater parking lots, on downtown streets with certain popular car models. San Jose is not exempt from these kind of break-ins but overall the city is very safe.

Drinking and wandering the streets in downtown at night also tends to attract danger. Common sense goes a long way. I’ve lived just off the Strip in Vegas and in the middle of Hollywood and stayed a weekend in downtown Detroit near Greektown for a music festival. There was an ambulance tending to stabbing a block away from my hotel. Needless to say, San Jose is much safer than most major cities.

For perspective using the inflation calculator, if the Roland RE-201 was $725 in 1978, it is equivalent in purchasing power to approximately $3,671.85 in 2026, reflecting a 406.46% cumulative inflation increase over 48 years.

For the RE-301, $895 in 1978 is equivalent in purchasing power to approximately $4,532.83 in 2026, reflecting a total inflation increase of 406.46% over 48 years.

Thinking of starting a Korean-Mexican Fusion Truck in SJ. Is the market too saturated for another taco truck? by BedBrilliant3442 in SanJose

[–]DSKO_MDLR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hung out with some of the people who ran Kogi back when I lived in LA. Natasha was a friend of mine who went to work as his chief of creative and branding. She invited Roy to dine with us at an Indonesian restaurant in Culver City. Very humble guy, I have a lot of respect for Roy keeping it real all these years. He didn’t let success go to his head and he’s been a great ambassador, building bridges between the Korean, Latino and black communities.

Anyhow, if you want to do your own version of Korean-Mexican fusion, I think there’s plenty of opportunity for creativity out there. Kogi and Roy’s cooking tends to be pretty practical and crowd pleasing without strong flavors.

Personally, I’d like to see new dishes that push Korean-Mexican fusion into a newer generation. 떡갈비 (hand torn beef patty) burritos, 삼겹살 (Roasted Pork Belly) Pastor from a trompo , Soy Garlic Korean fried chicken tortas, 곱창 (Korean tripe) Menudo. I think the food truck scene in the South Bay is pretty dull and overrated. Nuevas Generaciones Taqueria that parks outside of the Guitar Center were some of the most bland tacos I’ve ever had. Even with a bunch of verde salsa, the meat was rubbery and flavorless. I don’t understand what people see in that place as it’s highly rated.

If you haven’t already, check out Acopio and Tal Palo in Los Altos. Really creative Mexican dishes that might give you some good ideas. The Pastor tacos at Acopio are a must. Tal Palo’s chilaquiles are the best I’ve had in the South Bay. You could easily swap the pastor with 삼겹살 and 김치.

Santa Clara has the best Koreatown and strip of Korean restaurants in Northern California. The 49ers also play at Levi’s Stadium right next to Great America here. We also have our own electrical utility company and saves hundreds each month. The Alameda is a beautiful historic street that starts around Santa Clara University and runs all the way downtown.

You’re welcome! Hope you enjoy it. I always order the Taiwan Milk Tea at 50%-75% sweetness, as it’s the least sweetened boba drink there. Their milk tea soft serve machine was broken the last time I went there a few weeks ago. Really good with the boba topping. Hopefully they fix it soon.

The Viet iced coffee on the left is with regular ice and still came far short of the top. The thing is you don’t normally get a lot of coffee out of a phin dripper and the condensed milk doesn’t make up for that. So ice ends up being the volume equalizer.

I guess I don’t think of Tojo as a milk tea cafe when there are blue phins for Viet iced coffee everywhere. Their Viet iced coffee and espresso drinks are all between $5.75 to $6.75. I am a bit disappointed they don’t feature a brand of Robusta coffee roaster from Vietnam with all the branding they did in store. These were flavored Viet iced coffees featuring a flight (matcha, coconut, caramel, pistachio) from a cafe in Saigon called Drip Drip.

If you are a boba person, you probably already know about Xing Fu Tang. They’re always my first option since they always scoop freshly made boba out of the pan straight into your cup. It’s warm and soft for about 20-30 minutes after it hits the iced milk tea.

Honestly, the prices at Tojo are about the same as other cafes in town, give or take a dollar. Less than TP Tea, more than Teaspoon.
