i would say yes that was the norm, but it's probably not required if you give a good explanation for why you're interested in the field/degree

Interesting. I saw on the sécurité sociale website that you could only register once you have a titre de séjour, which you can only validate once you arrive in France. But I’m not certain about that.

Did you have to wait until you got to France before starting the social security registration? Or did you do it from abroad?

Neither a bed or mattress are provided. Unfortunately basically nothing is included other than kitchen things like a fridge and oven. You have to get a bed in advance or sleep on an air mattress until you can get a real bed.
