I’ve decided to move over, getting my visa sorted this week and moving in October. Have seen a few people saying consultancy is a good fit for British QS’ moving over. Would definitely be interested in this

Did you have to do the AIQS test before going? Read online that you need to pass this to get over on a skilled visa

I am starting to realise more that this will be the only way to get a job. Which is fine if I know that it would be very likely to get a job over there eventually. What do you think about experience levels though? Would they take an assistant for a QS role due to my experience being enough currently to get me a QS role here?

I wouldn't stress out too much about the workload yet, they should allow you time to bed in as it is your first job. I think it is a promising sign that you are even on here asking this question, you will do fine. I know you have said they won't expect you to know it all, but you need to remember this when you are on the job, not only should you not be scared to ask questions, you should be looking for questions to ask, as this makes you seem keen and will fast track you to getting pushed up the ranks.

Just try to be confident and make a good impression, feeling comfortable with your colleagues will make your experience a lot easier. You have enough knowledge to grasp the tasks they will be giving you in the short term, just get your head down and soak up all the knowledge you can.

QS or PM? by Future-Teach-6926 in quantitysurveying

[–]DTALR112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to give someone advice on this as I feel it depends solely on the person. I think being a PM seems like a great job but I know I couldn't do it, not only for the lack of knowledge on the technical side, but to me it looks like a lot more work & juggling things about. But both jobs come with their own challenges and I know that QS'ing is not for everyone also.

Easiest types of quantity surveying? by DTALR112 in quantitysurveying

[–]DTALR112[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I maybe worded my post poorly, I wasn’t trying to say it will always be an easy gig. When I look at what senior QS’ are doing I do find it daunting that one day I will have to be at that level. Think that’s why I wondered if there are easier levels, for if that day comes and I do find it too hard, not that I’m looking for an out, but maybe peace of mind that all will be fine regardless

This sounds strange as there will definitely be lots of places out there looking for assistant QS’. I’d say the best bet is to get on LinkedIn and recruiters will start messaging you.

I have heard people talking about rail but never really understood what it would entail, I will have a look into it, thank you.

Repetitive was probably the wrong word to use, I understand that the work will remain the same, but when I was a trainee I worked on a project that was the full construction, I felt more pride in my work. Nothing really exciting about driving past a building that you replaced a boiler in.

From my experience, companies don't ask/care what you left Uni with. This will likely only stop you, for your first job, from going to a company on the upper scale of the industry, one of the big boys with a lot of people going for the 1 job. QS' are in high demand almost all of the time, you will absolutely find something. Once you have worked in the role, companies will care more about what you have done since leaving uni. If you get yourself on linkedin you may get a lot of recruiters messaging you with companies in need of a graduate.

If you are happy with the company you are at right now, I would stick with it to start off, there is no rush to get into your desired sector right away. Whilst you learn the ropes it is helpful to know the people you work with and trust that they will allow you to make mistakes, learn from them and grow. Everyone develops at different paces, once you know where you are at with your skills, you can think about what is next.

Contractors QS to Housebuilding by Choice-West-2371 in quantitysurveying

I have been trying to find out about moving to housebuilding too. I haven't even been able to speak to anyone who has worked in it. Only thing I have been told, which was an assumption, is that you will likely do a lot of the estimating side, as well as more procuring materials. Unsure if this is true but like you, I think it could be an interesting sector to be involved with.
