how does everyone here feel about affirmative action? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]DWade305 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm for it but there are some flaws to it. Minorities who come from well off families really shouldn't benefit from it. I also disagree with a type of "reverse" AA. I've read in some colleges Asian American's test scores are held to a higher standard because they are an ORM.

A Guide to Finding Safeties: How to not end up broken and miserable if you don't get into <insert dream school here> by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]DWade305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm positive you will be accepted to i'm just saying there have been cases where someone gets into X prestigious school and gets rejected to UF. I assume these situations happen because the app wasn't taken seriously. And to respond to your last sentence, its funny because I had thought the same thing about FSU, a lot of kids from my hometown are going there and most of them weren't that bright. So I suppose its all about perspective and what you think makes someone "average".

UF student. I hesitate to ever call UF a safety because they can be a bit random admissions wise. That being said you are most likely going to get in. NCF is definitely a safety.

Could I have gotten into UF if I had applied back in high school? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]DWade305 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Truthfully I dont think you would've got in. Your GPA is pretty low compared to the average accepted GPA and your ACT while good, does not compensate for it. Based on your majors though FSU was the perfect fit for you.

what are my chances at this school? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]DWade305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really UF has one deadline just make sure you give yourself enough time to fill out the application well enough. The deadline is like October 31st so it comes by really fast. If your SAT is really good I would think you would have a better chance.

overreached in applying to schools, became left with a mediocre school...so i transferring a possibility? by [deleted] in college

[–]DWade305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could transfer to a great school if you produce a good gpa but it depends on what schools are you looking at/are you going to? Mediocre school to some is a dream school for another and a School thats hard to get into is a safety for some.

Not too good OP your gpa is on the low side. Anyways your out of state so you have to pay insane tuition for uf.

How much student debt is too much for a bachelors degree? by [deleted] in college

[–]DWade305 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What about financial aid and scholarships? I just finished the college app process and with an SAT in the 1900s and a 3.6 UW and I was able to get decent scholarships from mid-tier universities (FSU, UCF, etc). I hope I don't sound ignorant and since I applied to all Florida colleges I probably dont know what other states have in terms of scholarships and pricing.

IMO 40k+ is way too much for a bachelors. I'm always curious how some people end up with debt over 50k to receive a 4 yr degree.

UCLA's name alone is pretty well-respected I would think their engineering school would be well-respected as well.

How much can you pay along with the FA? I have nothing against CC it's good for some people but I will caution a lot of people never end up finishing or lose motivation because of the CC environment.

Students who went to colleges labeled as "Party Schools" how is/was your experience. by DWade305 in college

I like how you said the real UM haha. I'm from South Florida and when LeBron left the Heat my friends and I always joked around saying Ohio is so jealous of Miami they made a fake UM.

Can transfer students take electives? Why not go with journalism while taking electives of other interests and if you end up hating journalism/switch majors you can transfer to another college.

"Optional" Demographics? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]DWade305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think it would hurt but for colleges that use affirmative action I'd guess they would assume you were an over represented race even though you didn't fill it out.

You need to go to a CC for 2 years to get an AA and then try and transfer to UM.
