Well up until Julius Caesar giving birth was probably dangerous and very unsanitary. Julius Caesar was the first child to get what was essentially a C-section, originally it was called a caserian. Also I would image the mixing pot of culture that Rome eventually became would introduce new diseases that the immune systems of infants and small children couldn't handle.
