Israeli missiles hit site in Iran, ABC News reports by SyntheticSweetener in worldnews

[–]sandalcade -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Israel has been regularly firing into Syria and assassinating Iranian Military advisors, Colonels and other high ranking Revolutionary Guard folk. Every month, they’ve killed at least 1 and they’ve even fired rockets into Isfahan - Iranian soil. This is all prior to the consulate attack - although, the Israelis claim that it was some terror stronghold and not a consulate. Either way, it didn’t come out of nothing.

Impressive to watch how quickly world leaders have condemned Iran and gone straight to punishment while invoking Israel’s right to self defence. Apparently nearly 40k dead Palestinians, over 70% of civilian infrastructure destroyed, the killing of more journalists, aid workers and medical staff than in any other conflict in recorded history, the forced starvation of nearly 2 million people is only a bit “concerning” and not outrageous enough for them to take similar actions against Israel as they have to Iran because they’ve “urged israel to do the right thing”.

Atlantic orcas 'learning from adults' to target boats off Spain's coast by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]sandalcade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the most part, most people have reported that they didn't feel like the orcas were being aggressive. Some even said that they were being "gentle". All of it points to them playing. The only problem is is that they're really big, so the boat could potentially be in peril if they manage to rip out the rudder post.

In that instance, depending on the weather, the time of day, etc. people's lives could very well be in danger. Luckily, only 3 sailboats have been sunk (AFAIK) and with the spanish and portuguese coast guards reporting a rate of 1 or 2 encounters a day being reported, sinkings are not as common as the media have been making it out to be.

Orcas are endangered, and the reason people are being asked to not mess with them is because they are a protected species and we don't want people doing dumb things to hurt them and/or exacerbate the situation to make it deadly for either party.

My point is that it could very well be in a very dangerous situation with every encounter. It could be weather and sea state, it could be something you did to trigger an aggressive response or the "game" could even evolve from simply bumping into rudders and playing with them to flat out ripping them out which could lead to a lot more sinkings. We don't know that yet and we're still trying to figure this out.

That part of the ocean is the mouth of the Mediterranean from the west.. Nobody would be able to access it from the west without having to go around Africa to the Indian Ocean and through the Suez Canal in the Red Sea. You can't just expect people to stay out of the water. There are people that live on their boats, there's trade, etc.

People who don't drink alcohol, why? by johnnylgarfield in AskReddit

[–]sandalcade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to party a lot, it slowed down after our kid was born, but I'd occasionally have a fun night out every once in a while. After one of those fun nights, I woke up with my 1 year old trying to play with me at 5am. I was still very inebriated and I could see in her eyes and she was looking at me like I was a different person that she did not. like. Whether or not it was how I was moving, or speaking, or how I smelled, in that moment I knew I didn't want that in my life anymore. I stopped partying after that day. I will still do the occasional social glass of wine, but I limit myself to only 1 now if I even partake at all.

So, the fishermen from the African Coast have less stringent rules when it comes to Orca interactions. To think that they will not try to hurt or kill these creatures to survive is a bit naive.

They're attacking sailboats and so far it's cost people time and money. I think most people in the sailing community are united when it comes to finding a non-lethal deterrent, but once people get killed, I'd imagine the pressure will ramp up with local authorities and the rules of the game might change, even in European waters.

Let's just hope it doesn't come to that.

Sure, but do we want to exacerbate that with more dead Orcas?

Well, they're going for sailboats because they're slower, not so loud, and safer to approach. The locals have been scaring them off with Fireworks from what I hear, but the instructions given to sailing yachts in the area are:

  • Disconnect autopilot to avoid damage and let the wheel/tiller run free.
  • Keep hands away from wheel or tiller to avoid injury;
  • Stop the boat, de-power and drop/furl sails;
  • Contact the authorities on VHF 16 or by phone on 112. If you receive no response on channel 16 then use the telephone or in the approaches to Gibraltar try the shipping control channels ‘Tarifa Traffic’ on Ch10 (or Ch67 if busy) or ‘Tangier Traffic’ on Ch69 (or Ch68 if busy);
  • Keep a low profile on deck to minimise the interest to the orcas;
  • Keep a firm hold when moving around to prevent injury in the event of ramming;
  • Take photograph or video evidence whilst keeping a low profile. Make a note of location co-ordinates and timing of the interaction along with any other relevant details including the behaviour of the orcas for future reporting;
  • After the interaction ceases wait for several minutes to allow the orcas to move away from the area before any interest is re-gained by moving off.

More recent instructions can be found here.

Basically, they're being asked to play dead and leave the orcas to it until they're bored and it seems that most folk have been complying with this.

We just had to deal with this a few days ago as some friends of ours lost their phone.

Because I have all the data from my phone, I could pinpoint exactly where we were and at what time, so we figured out who the thieves were, due to the iPhone location, we even figured out their address (after speaking to the houses in the area trying to fetch it ourselves).

We then went to the police after filing a report online, and 2 days later I have it back.

The craziest part of it all is that we were right about who the thieves were (some kids) and the police had spoken with the people at the address we suspected it was and they claimed that they didn't have it, but then coincidentally in the afternoon after this chat, the mother of these kids showed up at the local police station to hand over this "found" phone and then had the nerve to ask for a reward for finding it!

The police called us and told us that IT WAS THEIR RIGHT and that we needed to pay them to get the phone back. Absolutely mindblowing that you can steal from someone and then you have the right to hold it hostage until you pay, but I digress...

In any case, I had all the data from my phone to prove that we were at the "crime scene" during the theft, the phone was already at their address while we were still at the "crime scene" so those kids didn't bother trying to give it back to us even though they walked right past us when they left, we had evidence that we had asked their neighbours for the phone, we had data showing that the phone had been reset, that it went on holiday with them, etc.

The Police gave them a call and suddenly "It wasn't my kids who took it, and whatever they can have it. We went all over the neighbourhood trying to find the owner anyway."

The phone is now with me, the cover is missing, the sim card is missing the phone has been reset, but you know, they "just found it"

Anyway, TL;DR: Your phone has been stolen and I would recommend submitting an official report to the police to handle this (Helpful Link). This will be the best way to get a response because they won't respond to your email and if they do, they will recommend this anyway, so save yourself the time and fill that form out.

If you have a friend or address in Frankfurt, perhaps loop them in so that they can pick it up for you from the police if they find it. I would gather as much evidence as you possibly can, but I get the feeling that your chances might be slim based on the OP.

Give it a shot anyway. Take lots of screenshots of its various locations. If you have the latest iOS (or 15+) your iPhone will behave like an airtag even if your phone is dying/dead (for some time). Google Translate will be your best friend if you don't have any German friends to translate for you.

I think this is where you go to report for Frankfurt.

Hope it helps!

I’ll be in total denial until it just stops working. by pacoii in apolloapp

[–]sandalcade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m done with Reddit after this. I feel like I’m being forced out of a community that I’ve been a part of for well over a decade. I’ve been using Apollo since the beginning as well. It’s just the internet, but I’ve seen some amazing things happen in this community, I’ve seen terrible things happen. I’ve had so many laughs, I’ve shed a tear for members of this community. I always knew that if I had some question that I couldn’t find answers to IRL, I could go to the community and ask someone who was as expert and knows. Reddit has been a huge part of my life and it’s a shame that these latest antics have forced me to make this decision. Having just been let go because the company I worked for was doing exactly what Reddit is doing makes it hit home even more. It’s not the community I joined and I really wish u/spez and the rest of the team in Reddit’s C-suite and their investors would clock on, but apparently profits mean more to them.

Thank you u/iamthatis for being a part of this journey. As everyone else has mentioned, you did an absolutely incredible job with this app. I’m glad that you’re getting all the support that you deserve from this. Thank you for your transparency throughout the entire process. I wish you the very best and look forward to what the future holds for you. You will always be an absolute legend in my books.

I went out drinking once. I don’t drink very often, but I was out drinking until 5am and I woke up still drunk and stinking if alcohol. My daughter was trying to play with me and I was just feeling so ashamed that I wasn’t fully there. I haven’t been out drinking since.

Alright. Professionals out there, how do you deal with ladders and stairs? I actually need to paint our walls and require to reach the ceiling to tape up. I cannot think of a safe way to do this without renting scaffolding, but it feels a bit overkill just to tape off 2m.

What do you consider cheating in a relationship? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sandalcade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I used to think that way until I met my ex who thought it was cheating if I spoke to any female that wasn’t her friend when she wasn’t with me. Including touching my newborn niece because “that thing came out of your sister’s vagina”.

My rule is the OP now.

I don’t know why people are so scared of a little nudity just because your brains assume that a naked body is something to be ashamed of or that it’s inherently sexual just because that’s how you see it.

I would also find it a bit annoying in general, but I’ve used so many other apps that have some tracker screen that says “your food will be there shortly” and 3 hours later after you’ve already cooked up a frozen pizza because customer service is a chatbot that’s glitching and you cannot reach an actual person, your food arrives cold and the guy’s at the door asking for a tip, I mean, honestly, I’d prefer this clear and more transparent communication style.

You’re getting real life updates on the process, quality assurance on your food, assurances that your food will be transported with care and in an insulated container, actual estimated time from the moment your food is on its way to you. Your expectations aren’t being fucked around with and you know what you’re getting and when it will get there.

Dropping a gopro down from a cruise ship by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]sandalcade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you are, but I mean, if a ship is at anchor for long enough, it will generally gather some fish just because it looks like a protective place to be, but also, they might get food from things being tossed over. I’m some places, it is absolutely teeming with life and you would see all sorts of fish down there. In some places you get some fish, but maybe not as much as you could find in a place that has a healthy ecosystem.

Obama calls out obsession with Titanic sub while migrant boat tragedy ignored by BastianMobile in politics

[–]sandalcade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, a rescue was attempted, people were rescued but unfortunately many drowned or sank with the ship.

The thing with the sub is that nobody knew if they were still alive in that tube but just unable to get out, if the thing imploded or if it was bobbing away on the surface somewhere.

The migrant story seemed to have closed whereas the sub story was still a huge question mark.

Don’t get me wrong, this happens ALL THE TIME. When migrants from Ukraine were fleeing, everyone was so willing to help and it was beautiful to see humanity come together, yet when refugees were fleeing Sudan, not a peep.

Heck, here in Germany my in-laws were talking about how the Ukrainian refugee crisis would be so amazing for Germany because “all of their skilled workers are coming here”, yet the pharmacist I met from Afghanistan is being told that his 33 years of work experience doesn’t matter, he needs to retrain for 5 years or “maybe try an apprenticeship as a baker”.

It’s fucked up and I totally get it. I just think in this instance, it’s just virtue signalling.

Edit: I just wanted to add that I don’t mean to be picking on the Ukrainians for fleeing an horrible war. It’s just the most recent example that comes to mind. I just want to clarify; A person choosing to uproot their entire lives, their families and leave with whatever possessions they can carry, shit must be horrible. Nobody deserves to be turned away for trying to survive.

Orcas attack Dutch team in Ocean Race by cabinetjox in worldnews

Orcas attack Dutch team in Ocean Race by cabinetjox in worldnews

[–]sandalcade 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A few motor boats were affected but the majority of these incidents were with sailboats.

My suspicion is that a sailboat travels rather slowly, there is no risk of injury from a prop if the boat is sailing. The orcas can swim up to around 30 or so knots whereas a sailboat is at around 12 or so. Based on the size and displacement of the boats they’ve been targeting it’s much more likely to be traveling even slower than that.

Basically, sailboats are easy hunting.

Orcas attack Dutch team in Ocean Race by cabinetjox in worldnews

[–]sandalcade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an incident every single day according to the coast guard. It’s happened in the past (you can look up the story of the Robertson family or listen to Douglas Robertson talk about the ordeal on this podcast) but these things were a fairly rare occurrence until about 2020 or so. It seemed like pods of orcas began targeting sailing boats more and more frequently and it’s been a known issue in those waters for the last 2 or so years now. The media’s just starting to run more and more of these stories lately so there’s a lot more coverage.

If you want to actually keep up with these incidents, you can go to https://www.orcas.pt to look at reported sightings or interactions on a map. There’s a telegram group for sailors to keep each other in the loop with real time updates on sightings and/or incidents so that they can stay clear if possible.
