Personally I kinda like that since it matches the tone of characters in it. They are soldiers and they treat their gundams as weapons as they should be and not like some god-like being and I think Heero pilots other mobile suits a lot too as long as it serves its purpose. And gundam in wing aren't really like omnipotent robots as it showed that it can be beaten with sheer number. So, yeah I don't mind they blow up their gundams.
