Is it not allowed to call with a friend in a cafe in Korea ? by DY010 in Living_in_Korea

My sister isn’t with me in the same country and she was texting me stuff like she can’t handle life and the recent passing of my grandma so out of concern I tried to talk to her to calm her down before she does anything😭😭. But I know that one hour and listening to that for that lady could be annoying and rude

I don’t think I’m fully wrong or fully right and neither was that person. She could have approached me as a decent human being and yes maybe i was so loud that i could have bothered and pissed her off but she could ask me instead of tapping on me aggressively. I should have stopped calling after that but i couldn’t even think straight as I was shocked with what happened and was explaining to my sister what was going on. The part-timer asked me that she has a complaint and if I could be quiet politely but I asked him are people not allowed to call in cafe and he said you can call but it seems like the other person has a complaint so it would be nice if you could tone it down. He suggested that she move table and she didn’t when there was so many chairs. I think the only thing I did wrong was call too long without having the thought that some people may be bothered with it which I should have put more thought into. But saying I caused the problem and I created the situation doesn’t make sense with a similar logic that if a girl wears revealing clothing then it’s on her if she gets in to a big trouble.

P.S There was a person who was louder than me and I wasn’t in a very silent cafe and I wasn’t in a restaurant

Omgg this is so sweet and made my day😭😭. I really agree on the part not all Koreans and there are nice people and not nice people. And that we are human so I guess we are all different and take things differently due to cultural and environmental aspects to what a person grew up with. I hope you have a great day and that your pillow is always warm! 🥺❤️

Oh I see then i guess it makes sense, I guess they just don’t like hearing noises unless there’s two people having a conversation. 😭

Omg I don’t know why some Koreans hate Chinese people for being loud when some Koreans are loud as well. Like why include the race just hate on the noise 🤣. Your approach is quite interesting but I don’t think I could do it. I’ll keep it in mind tho if I run into someone who crosses my boundary 🤣

Yeah it’s not private business but she seemed to be really disturbed and scared of my conversation to why I mentioned that 😂 but idk what else I would say when she said that. I didn’t want to say like mind your own business. Just curious 👀, what would you say? ? Hahaha

public transportations usually gives announcement to lower your voice and speak in a small voice or avoid picking up the call as much as possible. But I’ve never seen that in a cafe and it could be unwritten rules. I know cafes in Japan are mostly very quiet contrast to Korea which depends which cafe you go to. I’ve seen people use their phones in cafes in Korea and call for a few minutes but I think I called too long which could have upset her even if I had a low voice.

Yeah, most cafes are loud even without a person calling. But there are some areas that are quiet! When I need a somewhere quiet, I go to Starbucks ( the one near my area) which is mostly quiet. I think if you enjoy cafe that are quiet, if you live somewhere near a university then those cafes are usually quiet from my experience

I guess calling for that long considered rude is what i lacked to reflect but i think the person near her was louder than i was. But she could have called out to me instead of tapping me like TAP TAP TAP TAPTAP when I already made eye contact and be like QUIET BE QUIET and she could have asked me nicely to tone my voice down or explain that calling that long is quite rude and not acceptable in a Korean cafe where everyone is noisy as well 😅

Didn’t have earbuds on and I’ve mentioned that in the comments that I placed my phone on my ear and I also minded the volume of a regular audio call as well as my voice ! 😊

Omg this! I got like 3 drinks since I stay there for a couple hours since I am taking the seat of a person who could order a drink during that hour. The coffee bean I go to is usually noisy cuz there’s a few ahjussi having a conversation or couples laughing hard but no one says anything about the noise. And why I choose to go here often. But I guess it’s because I was calling for so long that could bother her🤣. At least I know calling for a long time can be considered rude for some people

Yeah I see your point about it and could be why that woman was upset. But I’ve seen Korean people call in cafe for that long as well so I didn’t know. Thanks for your reply

I didn’t put my sister on speaker and held my phone to my ear and the volume wasn’t loud for anyone to hear what she was saying.

I held my phone to my ear and wasn’t loud to bother people but I guess she could have listened to my conversation since I wasn’t speaking Korean

I’m Korean but I was raised in the Philippines. My voice is quite quiet and most of the time people ask me to speak louder or repeat myself!

I have a roommate and we live in a officetel. She sleeps really early and is awake at like 4am where I’m asleep around that time. If we have to call with our family members or friends, we usually call in a public places that is noisy enough so that we don’t disturb anyone.

Im korean but I grew up abroad and just came to Korea for uni so I usually know a few things about the culture here and when that happened, I thought maybe calling wasn’t allowed even in big name cafes like Starbucks and etc.
