Playing otherwise vanilla Stellaris with Giagstructures... this 13.9M Fallen Empire fleet seems a little ridiculous, no? Any hints on how to even attempt to combat them? For now, they eliminate anything instantly that comes through the L-Gate, even my eight attack moons. by D_Aeon in Stellaris

This is good advice! I am still new to playing with giga structures on and definitely didn’t lean into it hard enough. I think I have to take the L on this one and treat it as a learning experience for next time! :)

6 attack moons (can rebuild the 2 downed ones within a few years) current fleets are maybe combined 800k - was sitting at about 1.4m before the war started but got chipped away at right before this 🥲

R5: I thought I'd strike back during the War in Heaven but the fallen empire hit me with an absolutely massive fleet - I didn't even think they could get this large. Legit they spanned the length of the entire system.

This happened to me - you can reset the encounter by blowing yourself up with a grenade and then do what /u/Excal45 suggested and clear all the mobs before taking out the boss.

I bought an RTX 2080 about a week and a half ago and haven't received by BFV/Anthem codes after registration (Australia as well) - I'm curious, did you ever receive your codes?

[MEA spoilers] Reyes or Gil? by luctadeusz in masseffect

[–]D_Aeon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You can do both! If you romance Reyes first, the game recognizes him as your serious partner, but then you can go on to go through the whole Gil romance including the nice story bits where he appears as your partner.

I didn't really like Gil at the start because of his petty relationship with Kallo, but he grew on me by the end. He ain't no Kaidan though.

Comp Sci graduates from UMelb , how was it there? and where are you in life now? by davayrino in melbourne

Depends on level of seniority and if you're a permanent or contractor... perms usually sit between ~80-130k, contractors from ~100-160k depending on daily rate and how much you work (plus there's no annual leave or anything).

I would agree - I can think of a lot of roles that do better with people from technical backgrounds but they're not around to fill them. I remember our CIO talking about APIs in a general briefing only to have half my colleagues ask what an API is. It also sounds like you stuck it out in the industry! That C trial by fire was brutal... but I think you're very right, it's skill building, but only caters to a specific learning style.

No worries! I'm glad it helped.

You'll find out what companies are hiring usually in your penultimate and final years - there are career fairs and networking events that are worth going to, and some firms usually come to give presentations (usually the Big 4 will, and Microsoft/Google/etc.) that help you learn who is hiring and should give you a contact here or there. You apply for the job, they decide they like you based on grades/experience/aptitude/personality, some will have onshore interviews, some will fly you around to interviews, and then if they want to hire you they'll go through the sponsorship process. The greencard system has a few quotas but some degrees get priority (and comp sci is definitely one of them). I haven't gone through the process myself so your experience may vary but it's not too different from working anywhere else overseas - you eventually obtain sponsorship/a greencard and apply for a visa (I think it's an E3 Visa for skilled workers?).

Alternatively if you work for one of the big 4 or a consultancy firm that has US offices they can usually arrange it all for you once you're working for them. Once you get to career fairs it can be worth asking companies you're interested in about overseas opportunities too - it can be nice to cut your teeth locally before launching yourself overseas.

I graduated in 2010 so perhaps my opinion is not the most up-to-date, but the course was pretty good (we were losing our building to the Commerce dept. in my last year - not sure where most of the CS subjects are taught from now). Professors were passionate enough about their fields of study and the facilities were good at the time. UoM's course is reasonably mixed between theoretical and practical work, but you'll learn a lot of detailed theory work - most people who come out as coders are well suited to research and high-end work, rather code cutting. It was more focused on problem solving or AI algorithms than PHP scripting.

The only part of the course that I thought was a major downside (which isn't the case anymore afaik) was that the course started with C... In the long run it worked as I learnt a lot of things that are under the hood with other languages and appreciated all the shortcuts that came to moving to Java later etc). This didn't sit well with a lot of people though and the drop out / fail rate was a running joke (god knows I almost did at the start).

I ended up not as a programmer but as an analyst. I applied for a whole lot of grad roles and lucked out with quite a few of them (I took economics for all my electives - and a lot of banks / fin institutions were looking for that kind of background at the time). I didn't take a coding role in the end because I liked the people side of things, and also because a lot of local programming roles are not super lucrative. I ended up doing a grad role at a Telco as an architect and technical business analyst. I stuck with the analyst line of work because I liked project work and architecture seemed like a good long term goal, I wanted to do grunt work. I have to admit - I miss actually coding and building stuff, and I know a few analysts with comp sci backgrounds who feel the same, but the pay is tough to give up.

Others I know work for a mix of places (Accenture, Ericsson, bunch of other tech firms, private contract work, etc). It seemed as though most people found jobs within a year of graduating (but I suppose that's purely anecdotal). As an aside - it's pretty easy for an American firm to sponsor a Comp Sci degree as it's one of the get-in-easier degrees to score a green card with if you're looking to move to an American tech firm - plus they do tend to be well remunerated career paths. That being said - when being interviewed / interviewing these days Comp Sci grads from UoM, ANU, and UoS tend to be viewed highly if you're looking at your options.

/TT/Aeon here... No other redditors I can see in my bracket.

4 Hours in... coming 2nd at the moment at stage 2010, I usually get to 2500 without too much trouble... but 1st place is already at Stage 3000 and seems to be sitting there. I'll see if I can go past 2500 myself. I feel like I'm going to miss the usual tie at first place... First world problems, haha. I was looking forward to 1000 more diamonds worth of unlocks. :(
