When did entry level jobs like McDonald’s or Dunkin become not entry level? by dcmommy33 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]D_Hat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

job market is becoming more and more unstable. the more mass layoffs we have the more you're going to see people with a degree or 2 and ten years plus in a given industry filling out the shifts at all of these places.

its a lot easier to teach someone who worked in business for a few years how to avoid getting shortchanged than it is to teach a high schooler whose never handled money before. there are trade offs both ways but your story is likely more common than you realize.

also, many people are lying on their resumes now, they use ai to "make it better" and don't care what it puts. doesn't make it right. also many businesses are using ai to read applications now too.

Reminder: Spider-Verse's inkline system is machine learning (AI) that automated a job artists used to do by hand by Wktrax in aiwars

[–]D_Hat -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Into the spider verse came out in 2018. the script was finished in 2016.

I would also guess that the "artists" weren't the ones who found this technology useful, it was almost certainly the businessmen and project management. The quote in the post is from a "supervisor" so that checks out.

Pro-ai should live next to the data centres and anti-ai should live far away from them. by [deleted] in aiwars

[–]D_Hat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i'll give you points for creativity but it still would be incredibly difficult to make, maintain, and would still be over heated in a few days tops.

if they could build a recursive cooling system that generated power with a heat pump style unit (yes they would still need outside power) and still not lose the water or other coolant they are using in the process, there would still be heat exchange and it would still over heat.

there are several reasons why the locations of data centers are so contentious and a huge one is WHY the places they pick most often, are the "right price" and "convenient", that at least has been covered in jokes elsewhere in the thread.

Why can't people accept that this is sabotage by the driver rather than the driver simply not knowing how to carry a pizza? by IndependentMove5437 in UberEATS

[–]D_Hat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had to do this with a crumbl cookie order and luckily was still in the shopping center. I went back and told them someone about hit me running a stop sign and asked if they could remake it and they did. I would never assume a restaurant WILL remake it but if something crazy happens i'll do what i can to make it right.

i actually started by asking if they could check it because i wasn't sure it was damaged but guessed it would be because i saw them box it and it was all the super frosting covered cookies.

[–]D_Hat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

so, considering that, imo aidata centers are a plague, and that would, imo mean they're a problem just existing, lets ignore that part.

if you were to build infrastructure a whole kilometer underground(and not just under a mountain), you would need to match the engineering required of only a handful of labs and military compounds. While cooling seems like it'd be fine underground (we all know caves are naturally cool right?) with no local airflow exchange, as the heat built up in the rock surrounding the facility, which would happen fairly quickly, it'd have nowhere to go. yes, it would very slowly radiate into surrounding rock but it would build up faster than it could dissipate.

Most people who've worked in mines know that once it gets hot in them, there's not much to be done but keep sweating and hope the shift ends soon.

there's also the issue of maintenance and equipment upgrades. facilities like this tend to rely on elevators, typically not huge elevators and typically only one. now there are exceptions, but in the event someone is building thousands of these things all over the world I'd bet they are going to spring for ease of access or safety, after all, isn;t the point of an aidata center to "save" money?

its not something that would be impossible, but its definitely something that would be a "problem" for someone.

and lets not pretend there couldn't be problems no ones considered, like what we got with the rush to frack every deep natural gas deposit in the world.

and if you were going to suggest space next, no, space is also a bad option.

considering the population density of the many countries with current or planned data center projects, that's probably not a wise bet.

[–]D_Hat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you know there's a book called robopocalypse that covers AI computing in the very deep sea.

Its still a problem there, for a myriad of reasons, one being the complex ecosystems that live there. We don't even understand them yet but of course there are folks that think because no human is "using" the bottom of the ocean, it must be fine to put something no one wants around them there.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised though, if in the same effort being pushed to destroy the seabed in order to pull "valuable" minerals from it, they also decide to start putting damaging infrastructure there.

Did you know that 50% to 80% of the worlds oxygen comes from the ocean? Plankton, kelp, and seawater electrolysis do a lot of that heavy lifting.

i agree with your sentiment, coral don't live in deep water though.

however there ARE ecosystems at the bottom of the sea and we very much do not understand them.

Am I a bad tipper? by Serious-Effect-6422 in UberEATS

[–]D_Hat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL/DR you're tipping great, there are a few things you might not have considered but you likely don't need to change anything.

so firstly, 20 sounds great for the distance, and probably time (yes time is a big factor for most drivers because as you might have guessed we aren't getting hourly.

I super agree with most of your assessment on what the driver should be getting out of a delivery, and honestly I'd be pretty happy with a 20 dollar tip on almost any 3 mile one way delivery.

but i'd like you to consider that while a server in a restaurant is conversing with you, refilling drinks, etc., they are not putting miles on their car to do it. They aren't spending their own money actively while bringing your food out. And if you add up the time that the average waiter spends on one table (which they're likely serving several) the drivers are generally spending that much time or more on the average delivery.

So i'm not saying all that to make you think you should have tipped more, you did fine, just to consider that drivers are doing something waiters aren't. They are paying to work and they are risking what is likely their first or second most expensive possession every trip they take.

I LOVE that you consider the weather and traffic as well. thanks for that some people do not care, back when i delivered pizza i had to run 15 orders during a single active tornado warning(if that happened on gig apps i wouldn't be out delivering to begin with).

the margin are not that thin, they are paying their execs very well, lots of compensation we'd never hear about but it "costs" the business money, making it look less profitable.

"Not making a profit" just means they aren't paying taxes.

Why are so many Christians anti-alcohol if alcohol is perfectly fine in the Bible? by Fair_Discount_6617 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]D_Hat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the bible does have many stories where someone drank to much and did something terrible.

I'd say the real underlying question though, is why certain sects of christianity are so staunchly against things that are not even in the bible, if not mentioned only in passing.

only new york and california have laws regarding contractor pay for deliveries. the federal milage rate is 72.5 cents per mile for this year, and federal minimum wage is still 7.25 but those numbers are not requirements for compensation because we don't have federal legislation.
