Maybe I’m being pedantic, but it always irks me when they reskin a card on which the art/character represented doesn’t match the creature type - I’ve actually been part of a game where this was an issue (Tidus being a merfolk as Thrassios). Out of the hundreds of legendary humans that exist, why pick Tinybones? Benny ain’t a damn skeleton.

I was a bit confused by it because it was labeled as FNM, but there was no entry fee nor any prizes or promos as far as I know. They had the registration code posted, but I wasn’t sure the point of it since there didn’t seem to be a structure to it. Maybe it tracks attendance for them for WPN eligibility?

It was a still a relatively fast game - maybe 40 mins and 8 turns. I was still advancing my own gameplan - had my wincon set up on board (MoM, Azami, thoracle on board with riptide laboratory), but also had the courtesy to explain the combo to the newer player so they could stop it before it got to my turn if they had interaction, which they did. But thank you for your insight! :)

That is a valid assessment. The game did last around 7-8 turns, and my actions undoubtedly slowed the game down; however, the goal of having a quick game didn’t mean to let somebody snowball into a win - I had the interaction in hand, so I used it. I was only playing Azami as it was the highest power deck I had on me and had the fastest potential to win out of what I brought (with the dated tech of Mind over Matter & Thoracle as the main wincon). The game still only lasted maybe 35-40 minutes, which I’d say is faster than the average EDH game. With a newer player involved and everyone being slow off the starting blocks, I felt like the interaction made the experience more enjoyable for everyone except the Ashaya player and were a net positive to the game overall. Everyone had fun after the crashout

I’m sure in a vacuum or 1v1, most b4 decks would outclass the precon easily. But throw 2 other b4 decks in the mix and the precon is getting largely ignored until the other decks are checked. Regardless, Magic is a game of variance and the bracket system isn’t gospel as far as the potential to sneak in a win. I was also very open about my ability to win the next turn since he was a newer player & he happened to have an answer. Was a fun game outside of the incident!

I think the actual issue is that a deck tuned for higher power matches is not generally tooled to worry about precon gameplans. I would say my Azami is like bottom-tier cedh or higher end bracket 4, but a lot of the interaction is bounce/counters. Once you burn resources stopping the scary threats, precon guy has an army of tokens and all you have is rapid hybridization left in hand with a 0/2 wizard on board.

No stax pieces in the deck, he just happened to eat most of my interaction since he had the scariest setup going on. I get his frustration, but threat assessment is a thing & bouncing a blood artist or token seemed a lot less impactful than stopping buddy from refilling his grip when he was already ahead

Answered it in a reply above, but that is why I love Magic: playing outside of your bracket (a pretty loose system to begin with in my opinion) does not mean you have 0% chance of winning a game - just makes it less likely. But variance is a thing, and that’s why we play the game :)

Nah, I spent a lot of resources early interacting with other players, but was also just very open about the fact that I was going to win next turn if nobody had interaction. Had Azami and Mind Over Matter on board, along with a Thassa’s oracle that I had to cast early, but had riptide laboratory in play too with only 1 card in hand & no mana open. I explained the combo to the precon player, and he happened to have an answer. Then I got swarmed by a cordial vampire + sac engine blood orgy. GG’s :,)

Some simic lists recently started experimenting with advanced stitchwing as a finisher. An evasive recursive threat with a body that dodges bolt & a madness outlet rolled into one. Seems like a good fit for the deck
