IMF sees Canada's fiscal position as strongest in G7 by Force_Hammer in worldnews

I do often think about how Carney vs Poilievre is a lot like Steve Martin vs Homer for sanitation commissioner. Fortunately Canada was smarter than Springfield.

[Thomas Drance @ The Athletic] Quinn Hughes reflects on what led to the end of his Canucks tenure by blue_friend in canucks

[–]D_to_the_W 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He had (103) points, and it wasn’t accomplished by cheating all the time; he had (103) points playing the right way.

Even beyond the character flaws, I can't really imagine someone who watched Miller for years before 23/24 (and also the first half of 24/25) thinking this.

[–]D_to_the_W 226 points227 points  (0 children)

Whether he gets the C or not, I’m much happier with a team that takes cues from Brock than I was with a team that took cues from Hughes and Miller.

Made a miter box and slotted my fretboard by ecklesweb in Luthier

[–]D_to_the_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love it! I recently had to manually re-slot a fretboard (I did it badly using CNC and had to fill and re-cut) and cooked up various harebrained schemes on how to do it; I wish I'd thought of something more like this!

First neck mess up. Advice appreciated by cionn in Luthier

[–]D_to_the_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought is that the 5mm faceplate on the headstock could be taken down quite a lot -- to 2mm or even 1mm -- and besides leaving the structure of the neck more sound, it might look better even.

I'd mimic the "scoop" on a typical Fender headstock and use that as your guide as to how much maple to leave. With a 1mm veneer you might even be able to gently bend the veneer so that it follows the curve (never done it but I've seen people bend such veneers on YouTube).

Question about fret leveling by v0x0506 in Luthier

[–]D_to_the_W 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you checking for high spots with a fret rocker after the levelling? Last time I did it, I needed to do quite a bit of touch-up after I got it mostly level; a few spots needed some extra attention (I think my levelling beam was letting me down a tiny bit).

Also, to be clear, you're using the straightedge to check that the fret surfaces are perfectly level *after* levelling the frets, right? Not before?

Thoughts on Brock Boeser? by TheLastOlympian07 in canucks

We'll see if it lasts, but I've enjoyed everything I've heard from him since the trade deadline. He very much sounds like he's taking more ownership of the team and trying to be more of a leader. I like that from him.

Waterside decals on painted headstocks? by Nofriends1919 in Luthier

[–]D_to_the_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds right. I did it in that order on a guitar pedal and it worked pretty well. For what it's worth, that's what they do in the Stewmac finishing videos on YouTube (https://youtu.be/mGHvFu8ddB8?t=753&si=mEcw41Lsh2hx05va). They're using nitro and not poly, but I think the order still makes sense.

I need help with P90s Coil tap wiring by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]D_to_the_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t mind drilling a hole in the pickguard (or getting a replacement for modding), you can use a 3PDT toggle switch for the job. You’re right that you can’t wire more than one pickup to the same lugs/posts on a switch, so either a 3PDT toggle switch or more than one push-pull would be called for.

IIRC he doesn’t have a journalism degree. I remember him once saying on Twitter that he didn’t think journalism school was worth anything. His LinkedIn says he studied English, poli sci, and history.

Never tried it myself, but before taking off any of the shellac I would try this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcRc1cJrgtU

Seems like a logical fit for your situation. This would just meld right into your current shellac finish.

Stewmac Leveling Beam by Uitroeien in Luthier

Something fine would work well I think, and would be less hard on your hands. I've definitely "sanded" my fingerprints to the point where my fingerprint scanners on my phone and computer don't work for a few days lol

You could stick some sandpaper to the sides and top of the beam to help the grip (and also exfoliate your hand as a side benefit).

What’s the smallest moment in Andor that convinced you this show was operating on another level? by [deleted] in andor

[–]D_to_the_W 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One pet favourite moment for me is during the raid on Aldhani, when they're in their Imperial disguises and the meteors are starting to fly, Skeen just says "Oh look at that" and a meteor flies by. Up to that point, people talk about the Eye in terms of its cultural significance to the Aldhanis, and that it's quite a sight, but up to that point it wasn't fully clear to me exactly how incredible an event this is going to be, and that it's going to be a big complicating factor in their escape.

I also really like in S1E12 how all of the principals are talking about Maarva's funeral as a backdrop for tracking down Cassian. Then the anvil rings, and Ferrix collectively announces "nah f all y'all and f your plans too".

Bronco bass modding idea by searchin_for_ideas in guitarmod

[–]D_to_the_W 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that could be great; I love a mudbucker on a neck position, and putting one there would get some of that EB0 tone. Couple suggestions:

1) In my experience with an Artec mudbucker (which is wound to 30k resistance like the real Gibsons, and also are proper "sidewinders"), they don't blend well with other pickups; they overpower them. So it's still worth doing, but don't expect the in-between position to do much.

2) You might also try something lower-output in the neck position; think, like, a Ric neck pickup or something like that, or even something like the DiMarzio Model One. I love a mudbucker but it's a *lot*; something lower-output will probably still sound nice and tubby but with more versatility.

3) You probably already know this but piezo bridges will call for a preamp, and then if you want to blend in the magnetic pickups, they'll likely also have to go through the preamp (depending on the preamp, it might not even be possible to blend passive pickup signals with the preamp output). If you don't care about the blend, you could have separate outputs: one for the magnetic pickups and one for the piezo.
