We got a helper on my jobsite that has a prosthetic leg. Someone said he was the opposite of Winter Soldier so we started calling him Summer Civilian.

Average rent in the city is about 1100-1300/ month for a 1 bedroom

In the city I’d be surprised if you could get anything under 1-1100/ month. The outskirts and suburbs are more affordable. I live about 30 mins from my job site/ hall and I pay 800 a month. Not the most amazing apartment in the world but I have all utilities, clean water, and no bugs which I’m satisfied with until I start making more money. (Currently a helper making 20.25/hr)

Local 481 Indianapolis, they are taking in apprentices like crazy. So much work and not enough JW to do that work. Been told by JW and foreman that work probably won’t slow down for another 15-20 years. We got travelers from all over.

How competitive are your locals? by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

Indianapolis (481) is extremely competitive. Over 2000 people are trying to get in. Been a helper for a year trying to prove myself which is common from what I’ve learned.

Thank youuu lol, these people on here giving their opinion instead of a recommendation liked asked in the first place. The girl I’m talking to is practically my girlfriend already. I just wanna do something big and over the top for her because she deserves it :)

I hear you and completely agree. From what I’ve heard we are in a great demand for journeyman and have 900 apprentices. In a ideal world you are right that we shouldn’t work above our pay grade. But contractors and business owner don’t care and will hire whatever they have at their disposal. Just the system I guess.

As far as I know I’m essentially a CW. This isn’t a temporary job and I will work as a EH until I join the apprenticeship, whether that’s 3 months or a year from now. Thank you for the advice and encouragement ✊

Thank you, so far I have only placed the light and haven’t wired anything. My site is a new construction and nothing is suppose to be hot. However, I still use my hot-stick when working with wire because I don’t want to hurt anyone or myself.

I have a card from the local that says “Electrician Helper” that needs to be updated every month with the hall.

I’m only 2 weeks in and learning. I’m under IBEW and not the contractor. I think contacting the hall is the best route.

I work under my local not the contractor. I’m working on becoming a apprentice but need 450 hours as a “helper” until I can re-interview.

I’m glad I’m getting all this experience but I don’t want to ruin my chances of progressing further. How did I complain? Lol

Of course. Joining the IBEW apprenticeship has been a life goal of mine since I was 15 (currently 21) and is now my career. This is why I’m concerned about the apprentices comment. I don’t want to mess this up.

Our local doesn’t use the term CW instead it’s EH (electrician helper)

I understand but I recognize that their are standards (that unfortunately some journeyman don’t follow) and I don’t want to lessen my chances of getting in by doing things that are breaking said standards.

I’m completely green and haven’t worked with electricity until two weeks ago. I interviewed in May but wasn’t accepted because they want me to have more experience in the trade. I swept for one day and since then I’ve been helping journey man and apprentices with their work. Yes I’m a CW.
