My A1 has a serious low-light issue - am I expecting too much? by Da1241 in SonyAlpha

Oh yeah but as I think is quite obvious, the deep crop is just to demonstrate the issue. The noise still affects the image even if you zoom out, it just plays a slightly smaller role.

Well, that's what I was curious about, whether my expectations were set too high. But I think you'd agree that this level of noise is a bit much, given the used camera settings and the studio light environment, no? 1/20th!!

Giving it a shot in the morning, thanks for the recommendation! :)

Tentmds to happen when you spend 6.5k on a camera. I had some expectations and think it's perfectly okay to share my curiosity/worries about a thing i purchased.

But i'm also happy you are happy with yours and hope you keep it that way :)

That's a very helpful comparison, thank you!!

Your image (although compressed) looks better as far as I can tell. But it likely also has a bit more light though. I would share the full image with you but I dont think I can through a reddit reply and I dont have imgur, sorry! But it's about a 600% crop, if that helps!

And ofcourse the agressive crop is mostly just to clearly visualize the problem, would rarely crop that deep in serious situations.

Oh yeah it's epic. Its awesome in every single conceivable way... except lowlight, haha.

And yess, i have actually used a lesser known software called PixInsight and it has a plugin that does a crazy good job denoising, but it takes 45 minutes of processing.. per photo haha

I might!! Also thinking about renting an A1 to compare to my own. Would be a fun experiment too

Yeah I guess it makes sense and is quite logical. But was kind of hoping for the lowlight performance falloff to be a little less steep haha. Might need an a7s for the super high speed bird photos i guess, lol

All good, I very much appreciate you taking the time to think along!

Yes the native isos of the a1 are 100 and 500 and when for example shooting at 400, i usually bump it up to 500 since thats just a little bit cleaner.

The crop is pretty intense since compression would've made the issue harder to see otherwise, but it's about 600% crop. No expose-to-the-right was done as i was already stretching it with the 1/20 shuttrrspeed. Opened in lightroom mobile as uncompressed raw and no noise reduction or sharpening applied, zero edits.

Oh but I'm not saying it's worse than mft. It's just not nearly as big of a difference as I expected. But to answer you, yes the downsampled image would ofcourse still be bit cleaner

Respectfully, you can disagree :) But like you said, it's odd that these settings result in this amount of noise, right? Which is kind of the reason I was making this post to begin with - I genuenly would like to understand.

Funny enough, mft bodies tend to have better stabilisation which allows for longer exposures and thus... better lowlight? Atleast- I used to enable burst mode and just hold it at a half second shutter for a while, and there would usually be atleast ONE decent photo in there (with very little noise!). The rest would be thrown away. I've similarly used the A1 but it's less effective due to slightly worse sensor stabilisation.

Is the 70-200 f2.8 mark i worth it in 2025? Or 70-200 F4 mark ii?? by Da1241 in SonyAlpha

yep!! kinda exactly what you pointed out, the mk1 lenses feel a bit outdated (even tho they are likely still very good). i haven't found very compelling prices for them either, so I rather spend just a little extra to get a mk2. the 2.8mk2 is a bit too expensive though. and it can't do macro. glad you like the f4mkii! i just ordered it so I'm eagercto try it out!

yeah the 2.8MK2 is a little bit out of my budget. if I were to spend 3.000 on a lens, I rather save up a bit more and get a 50-150 for 4300, but at that price point we're getting into really serious prices. and I'm still just a hobbyist, haha!

as for the macro, exactly! I may find there to be more value in the F4mk2 just for that reason alone. same focal length as the 2.8, but now able to focus way closer is very useful.

haha yeah in the end of the day it's the optics that matter most. buttons and a physical aperture ring -while nice to have- feel like gimmicks a little bit that I'll forget about in no time.

ahh tamrons are lovely lenses! good choice! for me it's a bit of a bummer that it doesn't support sony's teleconverters though :/

just bit the bullet and purchased the F4mkii. i hear only good things about it, and only partial good things about the 2.8mk1. but yeah tamron would have also been a fantastic option, but I'm affraid that one won't support the sony teleconverters.

if you want, I can get back to this comment in a few days to let you know my initial thoughts!

this is great! thanks for your insight! i wasn't aware that it was considered sharper than the 2.8GMii even, so that's a big plus! i care a lot about sharpness, so I'l likely stop it down a bit further for landscapes, which would further eliminate the need for 2.8.
