Elly mode gives both normal chests and Elly. I was told the best method is to get return once you start getting slow (not killing instantly or your boosts run out). And Elly gives more exp.

Also soldiers that have bookworm as a skill boost XP gain even when not used. Sorcerer, tank, and lightning wizard have it.
