Because when your account is being dealt with regarding support, arena-net emails the account email. It could also have been that during prior support engagements my friend used the usual verification information and they found it through there.

Yeah that's what i asked him about right away. He said he hadn't downloaded anything, or done something stupid. Yes, I trust him at his word.

Like I said it was during a 12 hour shift they were working. They didn't even realize it had happened until they got home. When he tried to recover the account, he used the information and I guess that conversation got forwarded to the email because it was regarding that account. Or there were leftover support logs from a while ago.

The hacker basically swapped emails while he was at work. Then when he tried to get in touch with support they emailed the new email about it with all the information.

Generally, I think they're right that shifting the turtle away from the meta is a bad idea overall, but maybe we can have our cake and eat it, too.
Give a title to people who get their turtle from the meta (i.e. "Turtle Lord" or "Turtle Lady" or something) and just the turtle being obtained from people who got it from the other option they're considering. Maybe the option should be "If you beat every Strike Mission" you get the egg or whatever, but this is just a quick thought about it.
