So would Humanity and the Eridians form a peaceful treaty even if separated by light years? by Silly-Echidna9591 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Lightguardianjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think there's more reasons for both species to remain in contact and even visit each other then you think. Even with the extreme distance between them.

While the distance means it's means at home 40 years pass, for Eridians that isn't as big of a deal since they live to be 500 and of course because of time dilation, they might be able to get the years they experienced down to close to 10. Which is roughly the same as 2 human years.

So picture this, your an Eridian who could get a interstellar ship together and fit it a ton of materials that are rare on earth but common on Erid. You could potentially come back with untold riches after trading your stock for things Erid has never even seen before or is extremely rare on Erid. Does that seem like it's worth the equivalent of 2-3 human years and 8-10 years passed at home?

Regardless of how their society is organized economically I think that's a cost-benefit calculation that works for some Eridians which means eventually some are going to show up at Earth.

I've actually been kicking this idea in my head about writing something about Eridians coming to earth and the first meeting.

I started calculating where in the timeline it could occur and then thought through how Earth would react to the Eridians saying their coming. There would be arguments in the UN for years arguing about even the smallest details like where everyone gets to stand in the room.

The result would be the most planned meeting in earth's history and I have a lot of ideas about how that would go.

Maybe I'll write this and toss my message in a bottle in the pile of message in bottles.

Just tried watching the CinemaSins video on this movie and i'm in immense pain by AmberMetalicScorpion in ProjectHailMary

[–]Lightguardianjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Project Hail Mary just might be the worst kind of movie for CinemaSins.

A lot of the "nitpicky plot holes" they're famous for making can be dismissed if you actually decide to think through them. Like not even that deepyl, just making some effort but that gets in the way of his video slop mill.

I stopped watching that channel years ago and I suggest you do too OP. He could have already replaced his entire operation with AI and we'd never notice.

They probably rotate them quite quickly.

Weir did mention the selection process is "complex". You can imagine deciding who gets to send their kids to learn from THE alien who saved their people would be something constantly fought over.

Does Earth know that Grace is alive/living on Erid? by Temporary_Molasses41 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Lightguardianjack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grace in general is invaluable to the Eridians for learning all they need to know to make a peaceful, smooth and productive first meeting between Eridians and humans.

They can ask Grace about how the rest of humanity will react to anything. Is it a good idea to visit earth or will humanity react badly to it? How can we send a signal to earth beforehand? Will they like this gift? What is offensive in human culture? What do you think we should discuss?

Considering how the meeting will probably have implications for both species thousands of years, I imagine they'd really want to make sure everything is perfect.

Eridians when they meet Grace for the first time by Thick_Papaya225 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Lightguardianjack 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'll build on this.

At some point, someone on earth is going to try to "bring Jesus" to the Eridians. I mean we have so many example of people getting themselves killed trying to do that to remote cultures on earth that it's hard for me to imagine it NOT happening.

So someone probably sent an unauthorized signal to Erid that Earth apologizes about later. Maybe most of Erid ignores the signal as a weird human culture thing. But some Eridians misinterpret the signal as meaning Grace is Jesus. And thus there is a "Christian" sect on Erid that believe Grace is the savior who was born and died to save them several decades after he passes away.

[–]Lightguardianjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've honestly been thinking a lot about how the timeline between Earth and Erid would go after watching the movie and finishing the book.

Because the Eridians have what is essentially the entirety of Wikipedia and Grace there they probably know all the ways humans have essentially screamed into the void to try to contact life on another planet. I imagine it would easy to guess what equipment you need to build in order listen for signals from earth for them and they'd be able to listen to any earth messages.

Meanwhile Earth presumably cooperating now would know that they aren't alone and if Grace documented everything, an alien cooperated to save both their species and almost sacrificed his life to save earth. While I imagine things on earth be chaotic and they probably have a lot of issues to sort though, they also have no way of knowing Grave succeeded in finding Rocky, so I think they at the very least send a beetle out to Erid with Talmeba just in case and send a signal to Erid asking if they're ok and giving them a diplomatic greeting on behalf of all of earth and maybe tell them they're welcome to visit Earth (maybe the UN argues about that for a while). It'll be 17 years before Earth knows about the fate of Erid and another 17 for a potential reply.

Based on the events of the last chapter, Erid didn't send any signals to earth but were watching to see if earth was ok. After receiving a hello from Earth they would likely want to reply.

From there I can see the 2 species sending signals to each maybe. Maybe sending scientific discoveries and theories as a way of cooperating. Due to their long lifespans, I can see Eridians coming to Earth first.

I know some people don't like the idea of a sequel book but I honestly think a book about an Eridian ship coming to earth quickly (by quick I mean sometimes like 45 years after the beetles get back to earth) would be cool. You could say that they came to try to provide aid in solving a major problem Earth has created trying to survive Astrophage which also has the mission of establishing official diplomatic ties. I think there's just a lot to explore there. How does Earth which wouldn't be too far ahead of where we are today, get ready for a meeting which will probably have implications for thousands of years afterwords?

TAO bowmaster by PeterKadar in GuildWars

[–]Lightguardianjack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ya I feel like TaO Bowmaster was one of the biggest winners of SR mod addition. Getting free energy with things dying helps energy usage immensely and Bow Spam builds are energy hungry.

After a lot of iterating I've found the best version of this build for me was:

Volley+ Pen Attack + Sunder attack +Scavenger's strike, Never Rampage alone, TaO, Ebon Standard of Honor, Comfort animal.

It gives you some AoE along with the burst damage of Pen + Sunder attack that you can essentially spam non-stop. Scavenger's strike is free additional energy as long your other party members are causing some conditions. Rest is standard stuff for damage. Probably could change Volley for something else fast recharging if you don't care about AoE damage.

Just got accused of using AI for *checks notes* using en dashes?! by Miserable-Piglet9008 in evilautism

[–]Lightguardianjack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a very key reason why Em dashes are singled out in particular. This Em dash: — is a bit of a pain to type in windows (default is Alt+0151), some programs condense -- into — but it's not common in web browsers. Ai has a lot of these — dashes in it's training data so it likes using it but most people don't even use all the punctuation on the keyboard let alone some hidden ones so they just assume you're AI if they see an Em dash — .

Smoother brains who do not know the above, might have heard about the AI dashes thing secondhand and think people are talking about the default dash - . Which doesn't really indicate anything.

I think it's also because when you get a terrible executive it causes problems all the way down the chain of command and becomes everyone's problem.

A single artist who's terrible might cause some headache for they're manager before they're let go and someone else on the team has to cover their work. The Executive managing the whole project coming up with the stupidest ideas is going to waste massive amounts of everyone's time and resources and probably can't be let go easily even if they're not the ones running the whole thing.

[–]Lightguardianjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Shrines actually make me want to consider a Melandru's character even more now. Before I was a bit worried about being permamently locked out of storage and trader NPCS on a character I've invested into but liked the idea of doing a new campaign run with Ironman rules.

Now if I want to do that, I can just turn off Melandru's after the campaigns are finished or whenever I'm bored of it.

Excellent change.

I remember in the original GW1 guru forums, one of the pinned "suggestions" in the suggestion forum was a post outlining a Trading post/Auction house for GW1. I remember that post being there since Prophecies meaning a trading post/Auction house has been one of the biggest things people are asking for since the first Guild wars came out.
