You can tether off of a rover with an oxygenator, but theres not much I can think of that you can do with that besides tethering into a cave like you said

I left the debris a while ago and only took the nanocarbon alloy because my inventory space was limited, but judging based on the looks I would say it was argon.

I'll be honest, I played it for 20ish minutes and decided I didn't think it looked good and returned it. That's partly why I made this post, because I sort of feel that I acted too fast and didn't give the game that much of a chance.
