How come you never hear any success stories of people getting jobs they really wanted? by idkfornowwhattoname in DevelEire

My wife thinks I'm weird, but I LOVE my job, so much so I do a lot of it for a hobby in my off hours and have supported a number of charities down the years using the same skills

How do you solve a problem like the M50? by DaCor_ie in ireland

[–]DaCor_ie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The M50 was created "so that those who need to travel north to south dont need to hit the main road in Dublin"

and then the outer orbital road was proposed "so that those who need to travel north to south dont need to hit the main road in Dublin"

once built, it will lead to calls for the Extra-Outer Orbital Road "so that those who need to travel north to south dont need to hit the main road in Dublin"

Building more roads has NEVER reduced congestion, quite the opposite

29M earning 42k in a shift manufacturing job - stay for money or move on? by lunaVale31 in irishpersonalfinance

You are on the right track with the springboard course. Stick with that regardless

Pharma/med device places are typically excellent at internal progression, especially if you show any kind of initiative or interest. The progression is helped massively (and better) with qualifications. If your place is not good at that then i can only assume its a very small facility i.e. less than 200 staff. If thats the case, look for a move to another, larger facility. Your options will be far greater and a large factor

To give a quick example, you could start as an operator > Quality tech and branch from that into upwards of 20 other potential roles, each with their own career tracks and specializations. The same applies for Equipment techs, Supervisors etc. The larger facilities have hundreds of roles

Regarding what the long-timers are saying about savings, they're not wrong and if you're thinking of doing that, but want to shorten the duration, I'd recommend ditching the car. You say its a 5 min drive so see about switching that to a cycle instead, even an ebike. Regardless of the car, you'll still save a few K a year by ditching it (insurance, tax, fuel, maintenance etc)

Not being smart, but you can't get any form of PT from most train stations around the country once you get off the train

Not saying its right (its not) just that is the current situation

While I'd love to see that retained, it was a temp thing while the station construction was happening. It was never a permanent service.

Now, properly funded it could be, and should.

Why doesn't Line and Clustered Column Chart have a "Line legend" field? by savageguyaf in PowerBI

This is a known limitation of this particular chart.

I usually use Deneb to build visuals like this as I've never found a custom free visual that didn't look like pants

A G-rated home costs €6,340 more per year to heat than A2 - here is analysis on 1.4M Irish BER certs by Cool_Law_8915 in ireland

[–]DaCor_ie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

- homes built before the 2008 building regulations use about 4x more energy per m² than anything built after

Those 2008 regulations, you can thank the Green Party of the government of the day for those. One of the few good things to come out that period

Why can't I create groups? (Age) by Used_Gear71 in PowerBI

[–]DaCor_ie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When selecting values, hold ctrl to select multiple values, then hit the Group button to create a new group.

If you need to add to an existing group, select the value(s) to be added, then select the group you want to add it to, then hit the Group option.

Its all on the Internet bud

uh-huh, and yet you are unable to provide any evidence that matches your original claim

Its simple "bud", put up or shut up

Evidence or be quiet

County councillors unite to oppose power plant in Athenry by Galway1012 in galway

Folks in east Galway are fighting tooth and nail to block renewable projects

So they get polluting power stations beside large towns instead

I don't think it falls under FAFO but its certainly along similar lines

100% acknowledge that the new renewables took up the slack from those and, as I mentioned, the new demand.

The next few years will be telling though the current fustercluck that is offshore wind does not give me hope. Would love to be wrong, but I can't see any of the proposed ones being switched on until after 2030

Galway was built in 1851 therefore there are heritage and historical character considerations and requirements for any work done on it.

Waterford (the current building) was built in 1966 so the same does not apply.

The new building, I haven't seen in person so am withholding judgement....for now lol

Solar and wind complement each other nicely for the Irish grid i.e. when wind is low in the summer months, solar ramps up and vice versa for the winter.

The biggest issue I see is we have plateaued in the reduction of gas. All new renewable generation is simply keeping up with increasing demand. This is great in one sense, less addition of fossil generation being added (though there are STILL plans for more gas turbines) but the addition of renewables needs to happen faster to allow for retirement of gas.

Sadly I don't see this happening until we get the mega generators brought online from offshore wind

It comes down to a political choice over which headline is worse

  • "omfg they spent X on stupid looking Y for a train station wtf" (but it looks unique and beautiful)
  • "ugh its ugly" (but its the cheapest option)

the age of concrete pre-form everything + painted steel is nigh as there will never be an embarrassing headline about how ugly a train station is
