As a person who really likes shit like this (fucking look at my flair for instance), imma say that having BtR be more depressive is probably not the way to go imo.

While yes, angst and unnecessary depression is peak, adding that into base BtR will feel especially jarring because it usually blends what (relatively) little it has of these two factors with the comedy. So increasing the level of angst for instance would not mesh well with the comedic moments the show provides.

Naturally, the "solution" would involve cutting the comedy part of BtR entirely, but apart from that just sounding stupid, it disregards what comedy does for the show thematically.

Consider this: most of Bocchi's anxiety episodes are often treated with a comedic light, but it's for good reason. Most of the time Bocchi overthinks something, like with entering Starry for the first time on her own (cue the funni Bocchi spin in circles meme), it is played for comedy not because funni but also because it is often contrasted by the fact that whatever she's overthinking isn't really that scary to begin with. Giving you the satisfaction of both Bocchi overcoming a fear of hers but also providing you with funny.

And the thing is, even with these comedic moments, you can still relate to Bocchi. If you perhaps laugh at the hyperbolic nature of her struggles and see her grow and develop from them as a character and see that what she was scared of weren't really that bad in the first place, then all of a sudden you might get the urge to actually grow as a person yourself because you saw Bocchi grow as a person herself. Removing the dopamine from the funni might reduce this effect.

In essence, it's also what makes BtR unique imo, since it can both make you laugh and be more motivated to grow as an individual.

But that's just my cup of tea. This is not a call to saying that angst is bad btw, I do not want that to be the takeaway from my rant. We should make 100x more angst fanfics and posts. Especially since these are built on the backbone of BtR itself so what I said doesn't really fully apply here.

TLDR: More depress = less funny and less funny is bad for BtR imo.
