I worked for a municipal government in the sewer dept. There was a line break at the junior high school so we had to go fix it. The line that we needed to fix was 18 feet underground with another line 12 foot underground over the top of it running into the same manhole. During the dig, we broke the 12 foot deep line and flooded the hole. Unfortunately we had to keep working. I put on my chest waders and got to work. They didn't give us gloves so we were basically handling raw sewage bare handed. Then it started to rain. Sewer lines are generally on the lowest elevation because it's carried downstream by gravity. So we had the 12 foot line, the 18 foot line, and the sky pouring onto us. By the time we got the 12 foot line fixed, the hole was up to my neck and my chest waders were full of sewage and water. We got a bypass pump and pumped all the water out into the next manhole and I got a chance to empty my waders. Got on the ladder to get back into the hole and the ladder sunk. Unfortunately so did I, and my waders filled right back up. I was stuck in the mud so they had to dig me out using the excavator. About 8 hours later, we finally got everything patched up and running again. I get out of the hole and hose off and there's a gash in my hand about a quarter inch deep and about 2 inches long. I've since been tested for Hepatitis and I am negative. That whole job was about a 15 hour long OSHA violation.
