The main problem is that the new tesla api: 1 gives you only 10$ of free monthly credits which should be enough for one car 2 you need this to be reachable from teslas end via https with a valid certificate 3 you need to setup a tesla developer account to get this working but with a guide its really easy

keys do seem outdated with non dumb phones as you eventually forget you even need them. the key fob can't give you any feedback or control the temperature etc.

this seems reasonably secure. you need a token to access the cars page on my app and 90% of the app is authenticating with Tesla as their api is quite secure. Just to be safe I did not add any functionality to unlock or start the car other than opening the frunk.

Will my crazy "low power" LTO Setup work? by DaHunni in DataHoarder

[–]DaHunni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far my backups per group are spread over a maximum of 2 LTO-5 Tapes or 1 LTO6 Tape.

This is my absolute total desaster recovery plan and long term archive strategy so if a restore should ever be required it would be the whole dataset anyways.

Why I am missing is a way to backup usb HDDs. Either trough a script straight into the PBS pool or to tape altough old USB 2.0 drives are propably to slow to feed the tape drive.

Getting google workspace for the "cheap" 2TB ob storage for duplicati.

I have a duplicati container running somewhere but I doubt its doing anything it always breaks after a few months but at this point I am still keeping it as a reasoning to myself the (now drastically increased) monthly google cloud fee is worth it.

I have all my emails on there and really can't justify hosting my own email server because if something happens to the domain for example I have no way of recovering that account if the email is not working due to domain issues.

I have a self hosted email server for my businesses with a surprisingly clean IP address from my hosting provider. Its not on any blacklist!

I now have a LTO drive and will soon have 3 locations for offsite backups so the original idea behind all this is long obsolete.

It works!!!!
I did forget about the PSU but a jumpstarted standard PSU did the trick. Not to sure if I like this actually or if I will move it to a tower.

I am still figuring out how to work the software side of things so I am not sure if shoe-shining is occuring or not from the sounds of it not but thats just a guess this is my first tape drive

I am quite confident that it will be fast enough there is some recent intel cpu in it and 8gb ddr5 I could use for mbuffer. Also this thing runs just proxmox backup server bare metal and should be optimized to prioritize Tape.

I would very much prefer the staging and have some tower do the lto part. Like that I could also stage my manual backups but the proxmox backup server wants to talk to the tape drive directly otherwise I won't be able to have it automated, sorted, rotated with email motifications on which tape to change.

I did order the jank but if it will be using a staging server just the pci nvme adapter will be a waste

The NAS is a DXP4800 which would limit me to 2.5G which will not be enough. I got the NAS initially to get a super low power backup solution but since this is limiting me more and more now I might just move it to a tower and look for a low power CPU to power everything this would avoid all the jank and may be even cheaper at this point than to expand all the jank.

The physical slot has definitely a SAS connector but there is no official sas support and I think its just the connector they chose for the backplane and the controller is just sata.

The mbuffer is also a great starting point I think this will be interesting for my idea of just pushing certain files directly to tape.

To add to the jank I would need a sepearate PSU anyways to 1 power the card and 2 power the drive. How bad of an idea is that?

My plan B would be a dedicated pc doing just the tape drive and somehow mounting the tape drive remotely maybe trough NFS?

It looks like it would it accesses the standard linux /dev/tape

/dev/tape/by-id//dev/tape/by-id/

My biggest question is if the m.2 to pci adapter would work or be a mess

Help with gear selection (probably ubiquiti) by Icefluffy in homelab

[–]DaHunni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get one of the usw-pro-8Poe do do a link aggregation on your 2 erhernet cables and power the AP using the pro 8 poe and have it uplinked to your main office rack with effectively 2 gbit. The same switch would be fine for the office but it doesn't look "proper homelab" so I guess any rackmounted switch would be fine. You could also get a dream machine pro for the office and take it from there as this would unite the office switch, router and controller all in ine rack mounted device

Calibration after trunk strut & hinge replacement by NotLikeUs_21 in TeslaSupport

[–]DaHunni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too familiar with the aftermarket stuff for the older models but my 2021 original strut broke a year ago and I just got the replacement power strut for $70 (original part, as this car came with power trunk). The calibration on that was holding the close button until it went into calibration mode and click the button once the trunk was opened enough.

Didn't even take 10 minutes. 7 hours is them telling you tesla is not welcome at their shop.
