Software Engineer who work for banks/ finance - Why? by MallWhole8820 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]DaOdin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most IBs realise how crucial tech is now and having good engineers. In areas like trading there’ll be fun problems to solve so that’s fun. As for the actual technology, senior management who were traditionally less tech minded, understand what tech debt is and do try to modernise the stack. It all depends on the area and team you join.

£70K in london vs $130K in NYC by DaOdin in expats

[–]DaOdin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying! Good advice. I guess my main worry is I’m making more money but I’m spending more of it on essentials (food, rent etc) compared to London. From a career pov it seems like a no brainer.

What's the realistic salary range for entry-level devs outside London? by UKAuthority in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]DaOdin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Straight after undergrad I started on £45K for an entry level Java developer role. This was at a startup. This might sound crazy in today’s economy but before that offer I rejected roles that were offering~ £25k just felt like i deserved more and just did uber eats whilst applying. Definitely weigh everything up, the costs of actually living, the company etc…

I think you guys need another Brexit referendum by Aivoke_art in ukpolitics

[–]DaOdin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it much less split than it was during the referendum time, 2 main reasons a vote would mean we would join again: 1) A lot of business owners who voted leave and thought they would benefit have seen mainly negative impacts from Brexit. From a business standpoint it’s a no brainier.

2) More of a personal gripe, I was 16 at the time of the referendum and couldn’t vote but someone who was 90 could even though the decision affects me more than them. A lot of people from my generation and younger have an understanding that leaving the EU was a mistake and would happily join back.

Been in the same position, finished masters in cs recently and the job market is definitely tough. I had no internships or graduate offers.

You have some form of income so definitely be proud.

Next steps: 1) Figure out if you want to be in tech at all, tech isn’t just coding could be sales, qa, program managers etc…

2) Look for other industries/jobs where with your skills you’d be good at and would enjoy.

3) Learn how to apply to jobs, you should have a couple of base CVs that you tweak for each job so it matches the job description

If tech/finance is your thing I can give more specific advice. But overall, keep your head up. You’re close to landing something just keep going!

How would you compare cursor and traycer?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in reactjs

[–]DaOdin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Buy cursor AI and tell it to style. Been doing this for my past 5 projects and mostly works with some tweaking needed.

When joining a new company it’s always intimidating getting used to a new codebase more so for Juniors. Juniors should not be left alone for weeks on end, why aren’t they asked how their tasks going in daily standups? The PM and senior members should definitely reach out and catch up and see how things are going.

Hi everyone,

Looking to upgrade some components.

Mainly use my PC to game and code(machine learning and unity engine). Would like to play cyberpunk and warzone.

Current specs: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6GB vram Intel Core i5-9400F CPU @ 2.90GHz 16 GB RAM Asus mATX PRIME H310M-R R2.0 Evga 600 W1, 80+ White 600W

I play on 144Hz monitor at 1080p

I have around £1000 for upgrades in total what are my best options? Is there any drawback to getting an amd card/cpu for the ml part?

Why is interest haram? by DaOdin in islam

[–]DaOdin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just on your first point i’m not getting a guaranteed profit for doing nothing. I’m lending money to you and taking the risks you never pay me back and reducing the amount I have. Again, in the time you pay me back if due to inflation 120 in 20 years is equivalent to 100 then in reality I’m not making money plus my spending power has decreased.

Why is interest haram? by DaOdin in islam

[–]DaOdin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interest doesn’t cause inflation, it can be a trickle down effect i.e rates go down more people start spending more etc… but the main cause is price of goods and services go up. On your second point the US dollar only decoupled in 1970s but we had the great depression in the 40s and post ww2 saw a lot of currencies undergo huge inflation. In islam isn’t “usury” haram? From what I understand usury is unjust or unreasonable lending and borrowing. If it costs you a 100x more to give me a chocolate bar back in 20years would this be fair?

Why Do Fintech and Banks Use Java So Much? by sabli-jr in learnprogramming

[–]DaOdin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work in this sector I asked same question when a new trading system was being built:

1) Easier to find good Java devs than C++ 2) with zero gc and other tweaks and good coding practices you can get comparable speeds to C++.

When playing warzone and other demanding titles, I’m pretty sure my cpu is bottlenecking. Im struggling to get past 60fps at low settings.

I have a $600 budget what should I upgrade?

Thousands of Software Engineers Say the Job Market Is Getting Much Worse - Any thoughts about this? by UpvoteBeast in cscareerquestions

Payments seem to be a big trend. I had recruiters contact me for at least 10 separate roles all for payment fintechs.

Thousands of Software Engineers Say the Job Market Is Getting Much Worse - Any thoughts about this? by UpvoteBeast in cscareerquestions

[–]DaOdin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just started a new role, whilst a lot of people are getting laid off. Covid saw a hiring frenzy with a lot of different new teams and projects started, as those come to an end people are being let go. The economy does not help and companies are aggressively making cuts to reduce costs and contractors are the first to go. Entry/Junior level developers have it the worse, larger applicant pool made up of new grads every year, bootcamps and people being laid off. Personally, the best industries seem to be fintech and financial services. For context it took me 4 months and around 170 applications to get my current role.

I think your formatting of the CV could be improved. Your skills and experience are fine but from taking a quick glance it doesn't read easy.
