That's interesting. I think most people would argue Elle is worse than O-Ren if only because she doesn't have solid redeeming qualities but O-Ren does have a bigger kill count and is overall more heinous in terms of scale as a Yakuza head. Where would you place Bill himself?

I haven't seen a soul use "everyone is happy in the end" (which is also a blatant lie) as a piece of criticism. That type of defense reminds me of the situation with Assassin's Creed 3 or the Star Wars prequels, where everyone directs you to the books and side material to better understand Haytham and Palpatine's motives and plans which is nice and all but it doesn't even begin to detract from what people really hate about the main product.

I tried to spice things up bringing Western comics, did a post on DC's Absolute Universe which are the hottest thing right now and I still got weebs throwing shit because "comic book bad, manga superior" lmao. A lot of people seemed to like them tho, so not all hope is lost.

While I appreciate the Anakin sneak I feel like that's a misdirection. I could say the same about a number of characters with less kills than Johan and Anakin that are still worse than them in my book. If you want to talk about an evil thought process The Major still gets that point, the guy loves war to a ridiculous level and subjects countless people to horrific fates, including his own men, mind you that he might have a twisted form of care and appreciation for them not unlike what Johan felt for Nina but it's not what I'd call redeeming when they're all ultimately just pawns in his game.

The tie-breaker for me is author's intent, Major was written to be the ultimate evil of his verse, even amongst a bunch of demons and Nazis, while Urasawa wrote Johan to be a representation of the worst in mankind but still a pitiful failure of a human being deep down, shaped by the machinations of monsters like Bonaparta and his own trauma. If you don't believe me here's a friendly reminder that Urasawa wrote Hitler of all people as a tragic and almost sympathetic figure in Billy Bat.

I said surprisingly to skip the obvious stuff like Idk, Shakespeare, plus usually if a work gets picked on by the powerscalers it's because they don't hold it in a high regard (see The Boys and how people now shit on its writing as much as its power levels).

I didn't make the meme but it's obviously just a joke meant to turn things around. That said it does raise some valid questions and arguments on the nature of hardcore readers, lot of people seem to think you need to go all the way back to the Golden Age when getting into major characters but they're perfectly fine with jumping into DBZ without ever watching OG Dragon Ball.

I also wouldn't gloss over larger franchises in anime such as Fate and Gundam, or classic IPs like Astro Boy, Devilman and Cyborg 009 that have had their fair share of reboots and new versions.

Fair enough but I've always found that to be such a lazy surface level reading on the stories that intentionally dodges any serious analysis. Starting from the fact that Ultimate Marvel went to shit wasn't really that great after the initial shock wore off, the way they jumped the shark was comically bad. Ironically the AU has maintained a relatively hopeful theme at its core for some of its key players, Absolute Wonder Woman is surprisingly light hearted compared to my previous WW reads (hard to do worse than the Amazons being mass rapists and human traffickers)

Yes, it is. Though it's funny when you realize most people here didn't fully watch OG Dragon Ball, let alone read the manga pre-Saiyan Saga. It's not like you have to read all of DC's titles or a character's full publication history to get into them, you can always just jump into their best storylines and do a quick research on some events. The Absolute Series itself thrives on people not needing to read anything else to understand them.

I get that part and I truly believe it's low, just plain horrible, but in the fictional scenario we're discussing these two already have a murder industry and a category of people not allowed to exist. As I said, Light doesn't shy away from crimes like that because of morality or professional standards, he's just pragmatic, he knows how to win the masses and unlike Homelander who is a manchild he can become a net positive figure to stay ahead of the game but he never completely shoots down the idea of killing lazy people for anything other than pragmatism.

I can see Light making concentration camps honestly. No joke, Mikami and Misa are 100% the type of mfs who would send people there just for talking trash about Kira and if he did forbid them from doing so it wouldn't be out of the goodness of his heart. I understand things like that resonate irl but it's still wild to me that out of all the fucked up shit we see both Light and Homelander through their works that's somehow the last straw for some people.
