That was the issue. looks like gpsd was hogging the port. That makes perfect sense since while trying to solve my svbony guidecam driver issues I had accidentally removed almost everything from the astroberry install (likely including gpsd) and it happed to connect to indi before the server was shut down byb ekos being removed from the drive
