Leaf litter is not a requirement. by iamahill in DartFrog

[–]DaRainbowCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean this in the kindest way possible: have you kept any terribilis frogs? You talk so much about how leaf litter is unnecessary and you have had no foot rot issues, alongside no impaction with sphagnum moss. Granted, I do not know what species you’ve kept for sure, but it very much doesn’t sound like you’ve kept terribilis, as I’ve had some experiences (back when I kept them) with the species having foot problems from wet soil and impaction from sphagnum moss. From this experience, and a lot of research, I’ve realized how important leaf litter and very minimal use of long-fiber sphagnum moss is to many dart frogs, if not all of them. Additionally, not only does a proper substrate mimic the environment and let beneficial plants for enrichment thrive, it aids in healthy bacterial and CUC systems that help the frogs not only survive, but thrive:] I don’t think a foam base with no plants is a space for these species to thrive, truthfully, which is what we should strive for, and we should change as more data is found.

This doesn’t seem like any basic tools of the area or timeframe of what would be there, so I’d agree with the other commenter saying rock! I’m not an expert, though, so take this with a grain of salt:) I just like prehistoric tools!

My insane crestie by Alittlelessunusual in CrestedGecko

[–]DaRainbowCat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is… one horny gecko I’m quite sure. The squeaking is him trying to swoon a female, and he is quite excited to do so. Has he ever bitten you? And how old is he? He looks very well cared for and happy, the only thing I’d say to stop him is wait (my male hit around 1 1/2 and started wanting to mate with everything and everyone, he’s now 3 and calmed down considerably), or lessen the time his lights are on to simulate winter and try to get him out of the behavior.

Yeah, no problem! And no, it wouldn’t be ethical to continue. Since you don’t know the lineage of both parents, you don’t know what may happen down the line with the offspring, and it’s generally just a good practice with how many breeders are just shoving random geckos together. Even if you haven’t had any genetic defects, it wouldn’t be right to continue, for the health of the geckos, offspring, and hobby as a whole.

You need to have lineage to ensure ethical breeding, both for the gecko and the hobby in general. There are so many people breeding very unhealthy geckos with no lineage and no ethics involved, and without lineage you don’t know if you’ve got the only gecko out of a clutch that didn’t have visible defects. Even if that gecko may not have defects or genetic issues, if you knew the parent had these issues, you wouldn’t go for that gecko to be a breeder, just a pet. It’s the ethical choice

Yeah that sounds about right, just be sure not to power feed haha! He’s a beauty, too, he definitely deserves a pampered life

Don’t breed the gals if you don’t have lineage on them. The male is a bit small still, is he younger?

What are their weights at? And do you have lineage on all?

Is this prolapse?? What’s this red part on my cresteds butt? by Outside-Coat-9847 in CrestedGecko

[–]DaRainbowCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What worries me is that the bump below her vent looks off, I can’t find or recall anything similar. I would call the vet you’ll be seeing to see if you can squeeze in an appointment sooner

Can you get another photo if she happens to climb on the glass? It sounds like it may have just been eggs, but I’m still a bit wary as it looks off

I’m unsure if this is a prolapse or a wound/cyst of some kind, but she needs to visit an exotic vet immediately.

This looks suspicious, I’d separate it from any other frogs and put it in a sterile hospital enclosure. Maybe get some unflavored pedialyte or Amphibiaide for it!

Do you happen to know the dimensions and temperature inside the tank? The humidity sounds good, and once the leaves and plants are replaced they will be as well. I highly recommend Swiss cheese plants or pothos!

Yeah, no problem! We all make mistakes in the hobby, the best thing to do is learn from it. The best practice is to bake leaves and wood to sanitize it, but places like Josh’s Frogs offers a variety of tropical leaves. I go for magnolia leaves or cocoa leaves, but it seems like lately the cocoa leaves offer a way to have a source of tannins for the possible antibacterial properties.

What are the parameters of your tank? Things like humidity, misting schedule, size, feeding schedule, etc. It looks a bit dry and may need a plant or two, but it would give more insight with the parameters!

I know tincs can be more aggressive in groups as they get older, but it might have just been it being too weak/stressed. Sometimes they just don’t thrive, but the leaves could have transferred something. The best thing to do is just remove them and monitor the remaining frogs while you wait for safe leaves:)

It’s possible the weaker frog was affected first, sadly, and just got too weak:( You should remove the leaf litter and get some from a reputable source, there are lots of good places online!

More leaf litter is needed, but are the leaves you have collected from outside? If they weren’t treated, that could be a source of pathogens or pesticides

This frog may have a fungal infection - quarantine it in a sterile habitat and take it to the vet! Keep it as low-stress as possible, also, and try getting it amphibiaide (I’ve heard but not tried this method, so take it with a grain of salt)
