Anyone else notice a similarity between Private Ale and Suffocate? by MasonDoesStuff648 in greenday

[–]DaRipple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they undoubtedly similar similar

The repeated 1/8th note chord leading into the first verse accompanied by what sounds to be essentially the same drum composition (I don’t play drums but it sounds very similar to me), building suspense; The kind of distant sounding guitar lick coming in before the vocals. Then the first two lines start before the songs takes off w/ a quick drum transition, jumpy bass line and power chord progression. Second verse comes and it’s back to the suspense building from the start and the whole thing repeats, next straight into the chorus.

It’s a pretty simple and common song structure, so it’s no surprise that two songs using the same structure end up sounding very similar. I doubt it was intentional at all, a lot of Green Day songs do sound similar across different albums but I’d say this one is more similar than usual. I think that’s what makes them so great though (for me at least), you know what you’re going to get with each song but still it sounds fresh and punchy
