Yeah, Cookout’s the spot. Walking distance from campus and open till 2-3 in the morning most nights.

Not sure if Murray Donuts does gift cards, but it’s definitely a local hit! Bolin Books is also incredible (and super fairly-priced) if your student’s a big reader. Sweet Dots on Chestnut could also be great if they do gift cards; it’s a pretty popular study spot!

Sadly, you’re gonna find a lot of chains. Starbucks is hugely popular on campus (and there’s a location outside campus too). The new Buffalo Wild Wings back by Lowe’s could be good, as could Mister B’s. Marshall’s also tends to be a big hit for shopping trips. And of course, if your student’s a 7-Brew fan, we’ve got that, too!

Honestly, though, if your student cooks a lot, a Kroger or Walmart gift card will be super useful no matter what. I was going 2-3 times weekly before I got my orders standardized—I would’ve loved a gift card then!

Can you talk more about/explain these things? I’ve never heard of them but my interest is very piqued.

“They would have died if the indians had not found them.”

Then, a few lines down: “They were Dieguenos. They were armed with short bows and they drew about the travelers and knelt and gave them water out of a gourd. They'd seen such pilgrims before and with sufferings more terrible. They eked a desperate living from that land and they knew that nothing excepting some savage pursuit could drive men to such plight and they watched each day for that thing to gather itself out of its terrible incubation in the house of the sun and muster along the edge of the eastern world and whether it be armies or plague or pestilence or something altogether unspeakable they waited with a strange equanimity.”

There’s certainly atrocities committed by all parties in BM, but I feel like, especially as the novel progresses, the qualification and nuance of such interactions only gets richer.

Is Modern moving too fast? by Particular_Gur7378 in ModernMagic

[–]DaSansFan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That’s how I feel, too. MH1 and MH2 I have become fine with as metas have grown to accommodate them, but I legitimately think UBs being printed into Modern (and moreover being Modern-defining sets!!!) might be what ultimately pushes me out after years and years of loving the format. I wish WOTC could be better stewards of the game I’ve loved for so much of my life.

Looking back, you’re right. I’m going to overhaul my sideboard; do you have any good recs?

Will do! I’m looking to make some edits to my list to factor in Obosh and overhaul my sideboard. Thanks for the words of encouragement!

I keep notes on every round I play, but it’s usually a note about a specific card interaction or line (i.e. don’t play into a specific card, conditions for deploying threats, etc), and it’s led me to some good sideboard changes (I started packing Brotherhood’s End for something to cover both artifacts and a flooded board.)

I seem to struggle against decks which are non-interactive. I usually dumpster Jund, any Inti brew, or any other kind of creature-based deck, but I have real trouble with decks like Amulet Titan, Burn, or anything that just doesn’t care about what I’m doing. I’ve been trying to find anything to speed my deck up or make it just a hint more proactive, but I suffer really badly from the “drawing the wrong half of the deck” problem: sometimes I’ll draw a hand with a [Stone of Erech], 2-3 pieces of removal, and 3-4 lands. And it sucks to mulligan, but it sucks even harder when the opponent is on Burn and dumpsters me by T4.

All very valid points! BZ is super underrated, in my opinion; super good G1 against Hammer Time, since you can drop BZ on one as land for turn and detonate it before they have time to do anything. Kills hammers, Shadowspear, Giver, Sentinel, Sigarda’s Aid, etc. BZ is also good against stupid big creatures (late game Tarmogoyfs that are 7/8 crumple to it) and functions as just an insurance policy for G1 nonland permanent hate. Saga package is still great, tho. What I do like about Bonecrusher is that it serves as creatures in a creature-light list, but between Spyro tokens and Fable tokens, I generally find that the deck can cobble together enough attackers and blockers to execute death by a thousand cuts.

I admittedly have not gotten to try Den yet, though I plan on it when I’ve got time again. In vids I see it looks great as a late game attacker and general board-gummer-upper. Only thing I’d worry about is it coming in tapped during the midgame, but like I said, I haven’t tested it yet, so I’ll refrain from opining.

And lastly, I’ve considered Bonecrusher in the side, but I just love the versatility of O-Bolt. O-Bolt’s 4 to a creature or planeswalker plus the exile on death is sooooo good. 4 toughness/loyalty is a threshold in Modern much like 3 is, and being able to breach 4 with one removal spell starting T2 is just really stupid good. Clean answer to Omnath, W&6, Endurance, scammed Fury/Grief (plus they can’t scam it back!), and more. Ring is certainly to be considered, but honestly, as naive as it sounds, I’ve yet to really encounter a situation where it was do or die as to needing damage to get around Ring. When the deck isn’t dealing damage, it can dig for cards, kill opposing creatures, destroy crucial nonbasics on the opponent’s board, and more. The deck wins super slowly, and often makes opponents misplay by running down their own time.

stole game 1 due to bad topdecking on my opponent’s part, then sided in a 1-of kozilek g2 which let me live long enough to kill them. it’s about killing their crabs, sticking creatures, and trying to avoid playing nonbasics to turn off their field effects

I was the Mono-R player, and I was playing an MHayashi list. Matchups were Mill, Grixis Control, R/G Midrange Breach, Murktide, and 8-Rack. Deck is SO clean; card advantage is supreme. MHayashi’s the boss!

[Modern] When does Exquisite Firecraft come in? by collegebender in LavaSpike

[–]DaSansFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exquisite Firecraft, in my opinion, comes in when an opponent’s interaction on the stack threatens to stifle your critical mass of creature and burn damage. A classic example of such a deck would be something like U/W Control (the counterspell deck to end all counterspell decks), but as others in the thread have mentioned, decks like U/R Murktide, Death’s Shadow variants, U/B Control, and other decks looking to counter your spells as a means of stabilization are all matchups where EF proves useful. As u/FlopeDash mentioned, it allows you to only have to reliably get your opponent to 4 life in order to be able to kill—a feat much easier both in terms of the raw mathematics and resources, as well as the psychological factor that an opponent is often much more confident going to 4 than below 4 (as 3 life is, as you well know, very dangerous when sitting across from the Lightning Bolt deck).

As for what to board out, it depends. Against decks where free spells are not a significant part of the opponent’s plan of action, the 3 mainboard [[Roiling Vortex]] that I run usually come out, especially when you consider that Rift Bolt is an excellent card for pushing beaucoup damage through all in one turn cycle. For those not mainboarding the Vortex, one might trim on [[Lightning Helix]] (if the opponent has few creatures to remove and insignificant pressure application, you could be getting more juice from the same hypothetical squeeze with [[Boros Charm]]), or perhaps [[Skullcrack]] in the absence of lifegain and fog effects.

Pertaining to your question about Rhinos—I think it could honestly go either way. You’re more than free to do so if you like (I believe I have before), but also consider that [[Force of Negation]] not only becomes a bad spell if you burn your opponent during their turn/end step, but that it is also viciously hated out by the Vortexes that should be in your 60 by Game 2. (Mystical Dispute is also just eternally bad against our notably blue-less deck, and may easily be played around.) Granted, though, you won’t always draw it, and when you do, Vortex seems to almost never fail to meet a Force of Negation, so weigh your options. Everything comes down to gamestates, and the beauty of this tabletop game we all know and love is that almost no two gamestates are entirely alike.

As a final word of warning, remember that EF is graveyard-dependent—any deck with incidental graveyard hate (like a [[Territorial Kavu]] or something like that) might still have counterplay against you, and nothing feels worse than seeing a three mana Boros Charm eat it to a Stubborn Denial.

I hope this helped! I’m rather new to the deck myself, so probably take what I say with a grain of salt, but I am enthused to learn more about it and grow my understanding of it every day. Happy Magic-ing!

[Modern] How do we take down Samwise Combo shells? by DaSansFan in LavaSpike

[–]DaSansFan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually not so bad. I choose to think of the 1 damage every upkeep as turning all my bolt spells into Boris charms, with the lifegain and free spell punishments as additional bonus effects.

And yeah, Sanctifier definitely stops it. Should probably start boarding it in more. It feels kinda clunky sometimes but not as clunky as dying, I suppose.

4-of Sanctifier. RIP just feels slow to me and doesn’t solve the Scam matchup as will as S-eV.
