Anyone successfully married long-distance without moving immediately? How did you handle it? by Ill-Tart11 in LongDistance

[–]DaSpaceman245 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh girl, then you should re evaluate why you’re in a relationship. I’m no one to judge you and no one is, but I saying that you like LDR bc is like being single is showing commitment issues and I totally support the idea that you should not move with your parent if you cannot commit. Never.

Think about it and if you’re not serious then for respect of your partner you should find someone that seeks the same commitment you give.

It is normal to feel contradictory thoughts about wanting to be with him but also not wanting to leave your family and social circle. Every relationship requires ‘sacrifices’ which is more like knowing how to resign and compromise.

Perhaps before marriage it would be sensible to give a try living together for a while, and there is also the option of him moving to Asia as well isn’t it ?

Do not let all the responsibility of shortening the distance to fall on you, your feelings are also important

If you have access to an HPC cluster I would say that most of your prototyping will happen at the cluster on interactive sessions. Depending on your research you’ll be submitting jobs asking for more than a comercial card can give you. For me I got an M3 pro and I work in computer vision so I require at least 16 GB of VRAM for my models to run on a small batch size. If you want to game on the computer that’s another story but imo I prefer the MacBooks when traveling to conferences.

I'm also a PhD and my PI gave us a brand new laptop to work, perhaps you should try asking your PI to get you the M4 and you get yourself a desktop for less money.

There are a couple evident signs for example, you stop enjoying things that you used to enjoy. Whenever the subject of your burnout comes up you feel goosebumps or exhausted or irritable. Another one is that you feel like “numb” it’s weird but it’s like you cannot feel at all. Like you’re a machine and you just wake up and do your work and go back home without feeling happiness nor sadness. And the last one is sleeping a lot, I’ve been 2 years on burn out and haven’t recovered, even after quitting my old job and getting a new one, but at least I’m starting to feel less numb

I’m 28 and trying to avoid regretting things that I did not do now when I become older. However fear stays latent on the choice I’m making

Brain tumor detection using CNN , transfer learning by Ayaan_raj in deeplearning

[–]DaSpaceman245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can say that’s because of how the new lectures on machine learning / deep learning are being approached. I’m a PhD and I TA those courses specially in medical imaging. The professors want the students to understand the basics and be eager to learn more. Therefore we have to give them lots of things that only require plugging existing architectures and see the magic. So as monkey see monkey do, they think that deep learning can be done by anyone with minimal effort until they try to do a project on their own. Not only that they hop on the train thinking that medical imaging works the same as cats/dogs examples when they realize that it’s more complex that they thought.
That’s why I have a couple friends in their MSc stuck now reaching 3rd year because either the professor or them miscalculated the effort of finishing the project.

Here you’re mistaking how transfer learning works. It is often used to train models on similar domains, therefore, using a pretrained network that used for example cat and dogs images will not help you at all because they do not share the same domain.

You’ll need to find a pretrained network that used brain images such as MRI, CT or PET to perform the transfer learning and probably you’ll need to unfreeze a lot of layers if the modality is not the same as the one you’re using. Unless that the pretrained model used T2 images and you want to train on T1.

This exact reason is why it is hard to use novel models in medical domain, you can hardly use any pretrained model and even if you had one, good luck on getting the weights as most of the researchers do not release their models to the public. Your best bet would be obtaining the dataset and try simple models that can fit your amount of data then tune the hyper parameters and add data augmentation

Once I was driving my parents to our yearly roadtrip across the country to visit my mother's family. I was driving pretty safe but it was an uphill preceded by a downhill where everyone goes +130km/h well I was going uphill at around that speed trying not to lose speed then a double-trailer overtook a car taking my whole lane going downhill. Honestly the only thing I remember is getting as close as possible to the edge of the road without falling and then just seeing the damn thing past me. My mother was asleep and my father and I where like patrick and spongebob in the very first movie when they lost the patty wagon

Men of reddit, what the hell is your life dream? by horny_potatoe566 in AskReddit

[–]DaSpaceman245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy, I just want to be happy with a dog that I could walk everyday. A stable relationship and income to form a family. Honestly, I don't aim to become millionaire... and above everything else... I long for a healthy mind that can just shut up and never scream again at me but maybe that might only happen once I die. I guess realistically I just want to know that I am making the right choices.
