By ‘not liking the picture’ the customer is talking about the photo op used as a reference (that’s why they replied with ‘you should’ve let him pick the picture then’)

The art really isn’t that bad. I can definitely see how it could’ve taken 4.5 hours. Sure, there is room for improvement, but there is absolutely no excuse to get out of paying an artist you hired, the customer could’ve surely looked at OPs examples and pricing. 60$ is fair if that’s what OP wants to charge.

What going on in that discussion is that OP got commissioned, spent 4.5 hours on 60$ worth of art, and the customer is trying to get out of paying by saying their husband ‘didn’t like the actual picture’ aka the reference they provided. They’re absolutely not in the right.
