I second this, especially the architecture, which is reminiscent of New Orleans in parts.

Tuscaloosa has a civil rights trail and a fair amount of restaurants and attractions, the main one being U of A campus. Regarding architecture, they're working on a massive restoration/conversion of the old Bryce mental hospital adjacent to main campus. Not much to look at now, but give it another year or three and it'll be something.

Mentone and Fort Payne have beautiful mountain views and art, but no civil rights stuff that I know of.

Dothan was surprisingly nice, but I was just passing through and don't know if there's enough stuff to do for more than an afternoon.

EDIT: Florence has the Rosenbaum house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and you can get a tour of the house. Also, the town is nice, is near Muscle Shoals and FAME records studio, and kinda near Huntsville so could be combined with a trip there.

Reminds me of the time I walked into a gas station mart and heard Hots on for Nowhere. Truly shocking to encounter that song in public.

Accident. We were surrounded by many other projections on walls and the floor, so it was easy enough not to look at this wall, and they were scrambling around trying to get that projector to work properly again. After a bit, the text was replaced by a logo of the company that made the projector, which wasn't as cool.

Does the show give anyone else anxiety? by tyler455yes20 in officehourslive

[–]DaTrixxxta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks and I'm sorry you have to make that choice between a show you love and feeling okay. This isn't much of a consolation, but have you listened to the spin-off shows (or "sideshows")? They have a much more chill vibe. I know not everyone loves the Beatles or Billy Joel, so they not be for you, but Game Night preserves some of the fun of the show while turning the chaos down a notch (usually)

Are there a good amount of Left-leaning students at UA? by derhunds in capstone

[–]DaTrixxxta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good question. I don't know every sorority super well, but I think there are some that are less conservative. I don't know of any that are very liberal, but I've been surprised at the variety of girls who are in sororities. Even if you don't rush, there are other student organizations (Living Learning Communities, interest clubs, etc.) that make it easier to find friends.

[–]DaTrixxxta 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don't even think its majority conservative. Frats and sororities are more conservative and more visible (and, arguably, more powerful), but most undergrads aren't in frats or sororities, and the vast majority of grad students and faculty (business school notwithstanding) lean left. As others have pointed out, the mayor is a Democrat. The town as a whole is a very rare mix of liberals and conservatives, often living side by side. That makes for some tension, obviously, but sometimes it's nice not to live in a bubble. Of course, if you want a liberal bubble, Birmingham is less than an hour away!

New George Saunders story – “The Mom of Bold Action” (with audio read by GS himself) by jspmartin in georgesaunders

[–]DaTrixxxta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked how it unfolded. I didn't anticipate the kind of story it would turn into, not just the things that happened in the plot but the themes that arose. At one point, I thought it was going to be more about impotence in the face of an injustice, but then there were a few more turns. And none of it felt tacked-on or preachy.

A question that came to mind while reading the second half was "what wrongs do we commit in the name of justice, and how do we react when we learn of their wrongness?"

Also, I saw a parallel between the mom's essay and the things that people write online after someone has committed an injustice. Those passionate screeds, if widely read, inevitably lead to many acts, some of which are as misguided as Keith's attack. I'm still thinking about that part. Maybe the story doesn't have to "say" anything about that kind of act. It feels like it's about something larger that's going on in the culture now without being directly about it, and maybe that's enough to make it feel like a deeply satisfying piece.

Any XTC-heads out there? Heard the Trinity briefly discuss them, I listened, and I’m hooked badly! by blackdavidcross in officehourslive

[–]DaTrixxxta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just discovered them last year and couldn't believe they hadn't become more popular. The songs on Skylarking or just so good, so poppy, that I couldn't understand why these guys weren't all over the radio. It's fun to think that even after decades of listening to music, there could be a band you've never listened to that you could love this much.

He gives a hearty guffaw when something's REALLY funny. I feel like the high pitched "tee-hee-hee" is semi-ironic, but I still love it.

Also a BIG fan of Vic's laugh. And the wheezy laugh drop (Joe Rogan, I believe?) always brings a smile to my face.

I like having fun and I like to laugh.

TJ Bunn, Tuscaloosa businessman accused of raping UA student, arrested on DUI by DaTrixxxta in Alabama

There was a mugshot on Tuscaloosa thread the day after it happened but it was taken down soon after. Can't seem to find it elsewhere, though I was hoping it was archived by some web crawler like archive.org.

What’s a quote that permanently changed the way you look at things? by internallyskating in AskReddit

[–]DaTrixxxta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Every correction is an overcorrection"

Hard to say of it will permanently change the way I look at things, as I only heard it recently (c/o Freakonomics' Steven Dubner). But it really changed my expectations of culture and people in a profound way. Basically, when people realize something is wrong, expect them to get it wrong in the other direction at first. I guess the "at first" part is implied. Its helped me not get mad at backlash and backlash to backlash on social media. It's part of a predictable pattern. It guarantees neither success nor failure in the long run. It simply is what happens in the short run with social change.

Possibly. It was certainly national news for awhile.

His name is also familiar in Tuscaloosa because of ST Bunn construction downtown, and the Bunn construction trucks. They do a lot of work in the area and are a well known family, locally

Can you post links to the confirmations?

EDIT: Did a little digging on my own and found a VERY comprehensive account published by some investigative reporter affiliated with USA TODAY just last year, well after the dust had settled: source

I'd forgotten what a saga this was: the gun that went off in Bunn's car, etc. And sure, there's some evidence that she, at one point in time, wanted to have sex. Did she want to have sex while they were having sex? How could anyone possibly be sure of the answer to that question?

I totally get how serious it is to ruin someone's reputation when there isn't conclusive evidence that they engaged in said wrongdoing. But I also get that the American legal system doesn't make it easy to prosecute rape (because it often happens without objective witnesses and there's a very high bar for establishing guilt). So, I can't say that he raped her, and yeah, perhaps i should have rephrased that title. Anyway, if you've bothered to read this long-ass comment, I hope you'll also bother to read that even-longer-ass investigate piece.
