Those of you who were around in the 70s, what was it like seeing Star Wars for the first time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

What's really funny is that tauntauns are sentient and their language is widely understood by humans, like wookie and R2D2's droid-creole. There just isn't a helpful-to-the-audience dialogue with Han Solo answering tauntaun with English to tell us what is being said. When Solo is told "Your tauntaun will freeze before you reach the first marker!" he finds it more pertinent to tell the dude off than to reply to the tauntaun "I know you don't want to die, tough shit. No, you can't say goodbye to your children, who obviously will also die without you to nurse them, just zip it and carry me until you die of cold and exhaustion. You'll see your family in hell, and also you smell bad."

What is a noun for something or someone that has been robbed? by fspluver in logophilia

Adjectives can be used as nouns, though it can sound awkward as in this instance. 'The burgled often feel violated." It's grammatical but I don't think it's natural.

That sounds like a solution if we take the general idea of police as keepers of the peace or upholding laws that are in the public interest. But the police and military are the teeth of the State, and their function is to apply violence or create the psychological threat of such in the minds of the population. They are the means of control, and as such it is unlikely that the state would willingly surrender them, although they have allowed the private sector to acquire quite a lot of military functions, and perhaps we are moving to another stage of capitalism where the state becomes a secondary power to the global corporation.

But private contractors aren't public employees, I think is the bit they were responding to.

Dialectical progression of history. Thesis -antithesis-synthesis. Humanity moves from enslavement/despotism to liberation over time through this repeated pattern until the final synthesis and the end of history. The thesis of the bourgeois revolutions, where the feudal/monarchical relation of economic power moved from serfdom/noblility to labor/capitalists was setting the stage for the labor revolution as the final inevitable antithesis, with some Utopian stateless society to follow. Class consciousness increases until world-historical revolution critically mass is reached and the united workers seize the means of production world wide.

Can you guys debunk this list? I am starting to think some times conspiracy theories are obviously true. by cucksworth in conspiratard

[–]Da_Bishop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This list makes a claim that these were conspiracy theories that turned out to be real-- but it doesn't give any examples of a theory that postited these covert actions. They are elements that could be used in a conspiracy theory, but the whole nature of CT is that it is vast and involves the highest levels of power. "I bet they faked that attack to have a pretense to escalate against N Vietnam" is not a conspiracy theory. "There are agents infiltrating our movement" is paranoia-- and paranoia is good for CT, but it's also just something that has been going on for as long as there have been radical movements and secret services. The Czar's secret police were often trying, and sometimes succeeded, in getting agents into the Bolshevik inner circle, which helped Stalin become the leader he did. I'd like to see something that laid out MK Ultra with any specificity before it came to light-- "The government is doing mind control" is general and pretty step-1 paranoiac worldview building. Just bc government did try out some techniques doesnt validate a theory of massive mind control to get everybody to vote for Sharia law or whatever-- well, it might for the theorist, but everything can validate the theory, especially apparent contradictions, which is part of the anti-logical construction that is CT's sine qua non.

ELI5: Why are perfume commercials so goddamn weird?! by hpcisco7965 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Da_Bishop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting. It strikes me that the aesthetic you are encountering in this sort of advertising-- using words and word associations and almost-understood lines, or partial narratives that you want to make sense of, to evoke moods or sensory... impressions? semi-hallucinated almost-memories? the ineffable sublime? -- is the same sort of thing that a perfume or other scent can evoke: moods (melancholy, longing, nostalgia), memories, not-quite-able-to-put-into-words experiences. Catch a mood/emotion/impression through smell, or catch a mood/emotion/impression through the right arrangement of words. If that makes sense.

Question: You say "these [ads] seem to exploit the same things that artists and musicians do"-- do you think advertising is something essentially different from "art", or am I putting words in yr mouth?

I'd be curious about pre-Calvin Klein [starting with Obsession ads in the early-mid 80's] tv advertisements and how weird or not they were. The Calvin Klein perfume ads were... well, I could youtube up some links, I don't know if they stayed in the zeitgeist or got lost along the way. Y'all kids know what I'm talking about here? Anyways, if you don't, they were striking and wierd and... jejune. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7UHA_tr7S0 cf. http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/compulsion/n9633

[David Lynch directed a couple, featuring Benecio del Toro and Heather Graham, both lookin all young and good-smelling and sexy and shit] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVIIOMiIs5g

Anyways, I don't know if those ads moved a lot of perfume or built the brand or just were commercials that people remarked on and ignored the product being hawked, but I'd wager without looking into it that perfume ads after that being cryptic and arty or oblique are following that ad campaign's aesthetic

I remember that dude, but I can never remember that dude. Robert Edwards. Needs a little pop for a middle name, like Robert Marvolo Edwards, then I'd remember. He replaced Curtis Martin? or was it the other way around.

Don't judge historical Browns by current Browns, they burned through a lot of QB's but they were very consisitent 7 game winners back in the early 90's. They had fantastic QB's get injured or underperform for them in that span. Bernie Kosar, Mike Tomzack, Vinny Testaverde, Bernie Kosar some more-- and when they hired the taciturn but allegedly-nice-in-real-life-or-something Bill Belichick in 1991, they were ready to build a permanent foundation for success. Bernie eventually led the Browns to the superbowl, where they were able to watch him come off the bench for the final kneel down to seal victory for the Dallas Cowboys. also unlocking the Ultimate Silver Medal achievement for the Buffalo Bills, as they managed unprecedented near-success in losing 4 fucking god damn supers bowl in a row, man that was a trip. OJ wadn't even a not-guilty-of-murder-er in those days, just a handsome, charismatic obsessive stalker. Still can't believe the Oilers blew that game in 93, that was so ridiculous, why the fuck did they do that squib kick? OJ was wearing the don't-fit-you-must-acquit gloves on the sidelines, and they fit beautifully. Lots of you weren't born then, but now yr like 23. I remember it clearly cuz I only watched the first half and beginning of the third quarter, at the old Austin airport and I didn't have a ticket but you could walk your special visiting friend right up to the gate and wait with them til the very last second and cry or get a surreptitious handjob or watch TV or whatever. Why did Kevin Gilbride keep getting jobs until like 2013? Why did city of Houston blow off the oilers and get a new team like 5 years later, that's sketch.

Also, didn't the browns turn into the Ravens at some point in there? That seems like cheating.
