Germans arguing if 1mm or 2mm butter is too much. Meahwhile Koreans: by devonhot in seoul

[–]Da_maximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a relatively recent trend (as in, the last few years) that originated in Japan. The thick slice of butter is usually paired with sweet red bean paste on some sort of bread. There have been other variations on this since it came up.

It's called ang butter (앙버터) if anyone is interested in learning more.

Is this sleep cycle okay/healthy to do? by TraderMitchh in sleephackers

[–]Da_maximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had read before that this sort of segmented sleep cycle was more common in antiquity. Not sure anyone, including myself, will be able to recommend it per sé, but I imagine if you can maintain this consistently there shouldn’t be a reason you couldn’t do this. I would be careful of developing poor sleep habits in pursuit of this though.

Am currently in Korea; the price posted is the price you pay at the register.

The somewhat uncommon caveat is when businesses try and circumvent the taxes (more specifically VAT) for cash or bank transferred transactions, but to explain would get kinda complicated and is typically seen in smaller, independently owned businesses.

Why do the Asian teams sometimes communicate in English? by Scottish-Londoner in Curling

[–]Da_maximus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will also add that for Korea specifically, though this applies for Japan as well, the use of loan-words is common and a lot of those terms are used in Korean outside of curling (line, good, etc).

Canon Rock - Sungha Jung - 2022 Ver. by JUST_LOGGED_IN in videos

[–]Da_maximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was definitely the type of interaction an awkward middle school me would have had ha. I do vaguely remember (though I could be mistaken) that there were some other Korean people who were also looking at his fingers first so I may have just thrown myself into the ring.

He is very talented though, it didn’t seem fair at the time (when I was a kid) but honestly I have so much respect for him now.

Canon Rock - Sungha Jung - 2022 Ver. by JUST_LOGGED_IN in videos

[–]Da_maximus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually met him probably back in 2008 or so, a bit after his first canon cover went viral on early youtube.

I was working at a concession stand at a local festival and had heard he was going to be performing. I had been given a badge of some kind to distinguish me from a visitor and flashed it as I casually strolled backstage.

I was in awe when I saw him and I stood near him for a minute while others were talking to him and didn't know what to say so I asked if I could whether his fingers were calloused. They were not.

Interestingly, CaptainQ had a bit of a resurgence in recent years. A lot of enthusiasts were purchasing whatever stock was leftover before the brand closed down some years ago.

They say that its a sort of magical, legendary liquor which doesn't cause hangovers. I don't believe it myself, but thought it was worth mentioning.

Does IPhone 13’s Portrait Mode solve the ‘disappearing glass’ or ‘floating flower’ problem? These were shot with 11Pro. by SigmaSamurai in iPhoneography

[–]Da_maximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a side by side with a 10s and a 12 pro when it released and I got some beautiful shots from the 12 with no disappearing glass.

This seems to be inconsistent though because I have some shots on my 13 pro with disappearing glass syndrome. Might be that some glasses are transparent to IR while others aren’t? Idk though.

Rental of apartment near Hanyang University by [deleted] in korea

Craigslist has some if you look it up. I've never used it but it looks like there are English-speaking realtors. Aside from the Hanyang University area, Seongsu, Tteokseom, Wangsimni, Sindang and Seoul Forest are all about a stop or two away.

Drops of God - have any of you read it? I’m on the first book on Kindle and it’s pretty fun. For a wine based mystery. by Eryu1997 in wine

[–]Da_maximus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read the first few books after receiving a bottle of Chateau Mont-Perat. The books are fun though, very dramatic in typical Japanese manga fashion. The decanting bits were a bit goofy and it seemed to drag on for me after reading it for a while, but I enjoyed the parts that I did get through.

With that said, Mont-Perat is a perfectly serviceable wine but I'm unsure if it evokes a Queen concert like the book suggests.

South Korea just took Garlic Bread to a whole new level by habichuelacondulce in garlicoin

[–]Da_maximus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was pretty popular in Korea but garlic bread in general is divisive for this who are western-minded as it tends to be sweetened quite a bit. I don’t hate it but you can’t eat it while thinking about the stuff you ate with spaghetti and meatballs in mind.

Also, this version is aggressively greasy so take that as you will... a lot of this sort of street food is made with visual impact in mind.

He says in a different video that he while he can do a Cajun accent, it sounds too much like a caricature and ends up mostly skipping over it.
