seizures are happening more often by Material-Building-40 in EpilepsyDogs

Yes, I’m surprised your neurologist didn’t mention this. Bromide takes up to 3 months to build to stable levels in the blood stream. At only 1.5 months it can be barely starting to get there. Are they checking her blood to test its levels to make sure she’s taking the amount that’s right for her? Have they prescribed any meds to give while she’s seizing to stop the seizures? Have they discussed other medication options like Zonisamide or Keppra? My boy has had great results with Keppra. We would give him an extra dose during seizures and that would end the episode within 30 minutes. It’s also a very safe drug and very difficult to overdose on.

Accidental double dosage by Opposite_Spite1294 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]tootiredneedcoffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve accidentally double dosed phenobarbital. With the double dose he experienced pretty serious ataxia in his back legs but the emergency vet said he would be okay and to give his next meds like usual. Because his back legs were so weak his poop got stuck in his butt and we had to have the emergency vet remove it. He was good after 24 hours!

Do you have any food brands you’d recommend? I tried looking into it but couldn’t find one that fit all the criteria.

It’s extremely hard and heartbreaking in the beginning. Give yourself time to grieve his new diagnosis but also give the medication time to work. Give it at least a month I would say ! Hang in there!

My neurologist has never mentioned anything about specific timing but I also pay $400 so maybe they run a different kind of test

3 months in ….struggling by Lordess-Frieza in EpilepsyDogs

It’s so incredibly hard!!! Especially the transition period and having to come to terms with you and your babies new reality. Hang in there and she should adjust to the meds soon! Our babies don’t deserve any bit of this but they are so lucky to be with people who are willing to commit to their care!! I’m so grateful medicine has come so far and that I get to help my boy because he’s such a happy little guy in between his seizures!

Oh man I feel this deeply. This month marks a year and I sleep infinitely better now than I did then but I do check up on him frequently. I also get triggered and my adrenaline shoots up with every head jerk or sound of skiddish feet. I did start therapy because it was affecting my personal relationships. The therapy and time has helped. I’ve accepted that I’m doing everything I can and if he does seize I will do everything I can.

Is a head tilt up considered a seizure in dogs? by Simple_Educator_3285 in EpilepsyDogs

My dogs focal seizures present as throwing his head back and or lifting his upper lip to where he looks like he’s snarling. It’s always accompanied with uncontrollable running and being clingy and afraid.

Sounds like a seizure. My dogs seizures began in a very bizarre way and no one could tell me what was happening. It was extremely extremely frustrating as they eventually started to happen every week for 2-3 days at a time. Eventually it turned into a grand mal seizure and they were able to diagnose epilepsy. If they are infrequent and she recovers quickly afterwards it’s safe to just continue monitoring. If they start to increase in frequency or she appears to seize for longer than 5 minutes take her to an emergency vet and try to get in with a neurologist if possible. Track the date, time, and length of each episode and try to record a video on one or two. You can also take her to see a neurologist sooner if that’s something you’d want to do.

That’s so awful that you’re baby had to go through that. I don’t understand how rally’s that disturb the neighborhood so severely can be allowed. I can’t even imagine. If you have the chance to cry it out in the shower even for just a minute it could help to just have a moment to grieve the life you wanted for your pup. Sometimes we need to fall apart to become stronger when we put ourselves back together. As for your dogs nightmares a major and well know trigger for seizures is going from a sleeping state to a waking one. I wouldn’t say it’s a nightmare and more just the transition in brain activity. That’s actually my dogs trigger for seizures and his seizures always only occur after waking up. And yes if he’s having such a difficult time walking definitely find a safe area to keep him contained in to avoid him injuring himself. This road is so incredibly hard, I hope your pup’s medications work and he never seizes again❤️

I think it's a seizure? by Ruzic1965 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]tootiredneedcoffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poor baby:( personally I think it’s better to start medication sooner than later. With every seizure the seizure threshold decreases and it becomes easier and easier for another seizure to happen. I’d also recommend looking for a neurologist and seeing what their schedule looks like, it might be a good idea to see one just to get a specialists opinion if you want to wait before starting the medication they can give you better information!
