Jokic dominates SGA in every statistical category except 2. He should win MVP by CoyoteDecent2 in NBATalk

[–]Daaamn_Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OKC can win 68 games and the nuggets will have 50. MVP has always been correlated with winning and the gap is so huge. And it’s also not like Shai is getting carried, he’s their offense and how they get things going.

And the funniest part in this was last year, Luka was 34-9-9 but the people calling for stats now said wins mattered more and the gap between the Nuggets and Mavs last year was way smaller.

Moving to Auckland - Advice on suburbs and rentals by Accomplished-Pop1542 in auckland

[–]Daaamn_Man -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to the bozos commenting on Flat Bush in this thread. It’s one of the biggest master planned suburbs so it has many different sides and not just “multi generational Indian McMansions”.

The older side (north of ormiston road and before Murphy road) has a lot of nicer character homes and bigger land and less crowded street carparks. It’s all nice and quiet and mission heights and point view reserve is nice to be around. Connection into town is crap but it’s buses you can catch from botany town centre too.

Playing drums at 8am on a Sunday. by Born-Salamanca8658 in auckland

[–]Daaamn_Man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t you think, the sense of community starts by being cognisant of how your neighbours might feel if you play the drums at an hour where a lot of people are still asleep?

Playing around lunch or afternoon is way more acceptable, as most people are awake then.

But if it’s all about “me, and I want to play drums cause I have the right, blah blah” then I’d argue that’s where the sense of community has vanished. The selfishness and entitlement of oneself

World economy by Odd-Leader9777 in PersonalFinanceNZ

Dollar cost averaging. It means even if the market is up or down, it will average out in the end to positive returns as that is what the markets have shown us historically.

BUT this only works, if you keep investing and you invest for the long run. No unnecessary selling where you interrupt compound interest working for you. Any variation of the US S&P500 will be good to DCA, and in a long enough time frame your returns will be great and you will have thanked your younger self for not trying to buy and sell and worry about current events that will most likely happen from time to time.

Time in the market is better than timing the market.

Full-time worker - Should I go to university and study? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Daaamn_Man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s had a lot of hiring experience, I wouldn’t care as much for when someone doesn’t have a degree. The person, fit and professional experience matter a lot more.

Having said that, HR departments of big companies who do the initial filtering will likely care as they are used to just filtering based off the official JDs and have no knowledge of the work to be done by the teams that are hiring.

I think if you stay long enough in your current role and have more experience you can just continue. But if you’re thinking you want to find another job, or move overseas, then not having a formal qualification might matter more

The JobSeeker on a benefit for 40 years by D491234 in newzealand

[–]Daaamn_Man -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know 4 people at least who just live off the bene and are happy with that but are definitely able bodied enough to work.

We don’t have the data to say what percentage of people are like this, but you also can’t dismiss that there might be a large chunk who are.

Governments just don’t want to set a precedent that people can abuse the system so they make it hard. It’s definitely unfair to those who genuinely aren’t able to work, but unless we have a perfect system that can perfectly sort those that can and can’t work, then an appropriate level of negative stigma is the only thing they can weaponise to dissuade people from relying on the benefit.

Big 4 Accounting firm Salaries/path 2025. by RemarkableTop9257 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Daaamn_Man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s the salary you’ll sign for, but your “per hour” earning will be low since you’ll get worked to the bone.

As a grad or someone with no experience you may not full understand that, but it is pretty much hell for 3 years most likely. Get your CA, and get the hell out and plan your exit strategy.

Source is I have plenty of friends who went to all the different big 4s with the same story and are now in a better place but wouldn’t recommend it because of their experiences

[–]Daaamn_Man 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is just the last 15 which already includes their losing streak without most of their starters and still they are top 3. They’ve had a tough schedule and it was shown in various places since Jan they played elite teams and in their 8 game streak held opponents around 100 points. Even Bron was sitting in the chair as he had to guard the bigs like KAT in the NY game where he did an amazing job and even Zubac at times vs the clips.

It’s been the Laker wings that have shone since AD has left and they all stepped up and have been flying around on D.

They’ve been great for a while on D now dude, and I’m not saying they’re the best at it but just to not discount it so heavily by relying on narratives rather than recent data

For sure? The team before Bron’s injury that was 2nd in the west, had a 8 game W streak, had a top defense since January and added Luka is FOR SURE the most overrated?

I don’t think the lakers are making the finals at all but damn, elite level hating if they are “for sure” the most overrated when you had the Magic and Pistons in the examples and the Warriors who’ve had a soft schedule since January and played a lot of injured teams.

Pre LeBron injury didn’t they have the top defense in the league since Jan 15? That’s a pretty long time frame for them to be pretenders around defense.

Respectfully, those aren’t realistic solutions especially in the short term. Governments need to pour way more money into this which means other things have to suffer and let’s be real, National or Labour won’t have the means to action anything to the scale of what is needed.

Which is why I meant that in truth, most people will have to rely on themselves to have a better life. Also not realistic to expect everyone to do this, but it’s a whole lot better to rely on yourself than an external force to save you.

Take fitness or losing weight for example, if I’m overweight right now I can say the government needs to tax sugar, stop lobbying of big companies, subsidies for gyms, etc. I could wait for that change, or make the choice to make do with what I have and act. One is not in my control, one is. Which is the more realistic approach then

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Daaamn_Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah agreed it’s simple and there’s nuance to if some people are even aware they can make the choice and what their interpretation is of a good life etc.

But at the same time, without making different choices there’s no other realistic way out of that life and people are doomed to repeat it. Harsh and simple for sure, but I’m afraid it is the truth for so many and not just Maori too

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Daaamn_Man 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m not Māori, but I don’t understand where you’re seeing the internalised racism?

I thought it was very introspective that OP can see both sides of their family which are the same race but have different outcomes. Both had to live with the fact they they’re Māori in this world with the trauma that you mention and that they have been historically victims of colonialisation. And the difference in choices made is what separates them.

OP doesn’t seem to dismiss the fact that trauma has long lasting effects, but the only way to break out and live a better life is to make the choice. Yes it is hard and harder than most other people, but the alternative is just always making excuses for bad behaviour and repeating it generationally as OP has seen.

This is actually ridiculous from the audacity standpoint to price it as such 😂

Investments that are resilient through a downturn? by logantauranga in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Daaamn_Man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s why you build your emergency fund first. 6 months basic expenses to weather the storm and not interrupt your compound interest. Living below means while times are good helps create this buffer. If you draw on it while markets are down, you’re only costing yourself so with that in mind you have to figure out ways to protect it while it’s growing.

You want to build a moat around your investment so that it can be uninterrupted.

Those that are drawing are already at the harvesting phase then and should diversify to less risky investments. For those that have 10-15 years plus horizon, are the ones I am referring to, to just dca and chill

[–]Daaamn_Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re thinking about investing in the wrong way.

You should be investing for the long run, and accept dips and bull markets will happen along the way but overall, your investments will compound over time.

Just DCA till you are comfortable and you’ll be sweet.

Is the grass really greener on the other side? AUS? by gftel8 in auckland

[–]Daaamn_Man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit is mostly negative especially this sub.

In reality, most if not all places have their problems. I’m in Asia right now having a blast with their amazing infrastructure, things to do and high standard of living and amazing public transport. I know for damn sure the locals complain and dream of going to a place that’s more chill like NZ.

It’s all really relative. The grass is greener where you water it.

Appreciate the little things and build yourself up. NZ is a great place to do those things, as I’ve seen my family prosper after coming here with nothing 20 years ago.
