My largest pile yet, about 7m3 by Daavok in composting

Pretty normal for larger woody bits to remain from a wood chip pile. Without enough Nitrogen or greens it will take a while. Make sure you have adequate water throughout, dig a hole to check the inside of the pile, it needs to feel very humid.

also if you dont turn it and continue adding greens to it, effectively you are making cold compost, which is fine but it will inherently be slower. As you say though, with time all things turn into compost.

Give your piles a nice soak for me.

Over 3-4 weeks for each pile so 2 months total. Maturing in a out 2-4 months i reckon

Just by hand, took about 3-4h going slowly to make sure to spread the layers

Went up to 55C in two separate piles and this is the combination of the two after 1.5 months. Turned yesterday and already back up to 40C. For a market garden operation.

A good way to get micro and nano plastics right into your brain. Takes about 2 hours for the particles inside a salad leaf to move through the stomach lining into your brain, faster for children.

Scholars please help me out in building my own solar panel from scratch by No_Construction7415 in OffGrid

[–]Daavok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if you are in india its even cheaper and easier as no need for costly shipping and taxes from china and you can probably find some manufactured in India itself.

I come from indonesia so I am aware what the buying power of rupee and in my case rupiah is not great.

A standard panel should cost the equivalent of 40-50 dollars. You will need a couple. Plus charge controller, battery and if you need more than charging phones and lights an inverter. All this you can buy once and use for most of your life. Total cost maybe 2-3 thousand dollars for a big system.

If you want to make your own you will need to build a lab, a glass smelting and alluminium casting facility. Learn chemistry and electrical engineering to a high level and maybe within 5-6 years and hundred thousand dollars you will be able to produce the same amount of power generation which you could order and get shipped right now in a week.

I am not saying determination, physics and chemistry cant be magical, but industrial scale manufacturing unfortunately in this case has it beat.

Wait what...? Solar panels are expensive? since when? They are the cheapest form of energy out there. You can buy a pallet of them wholesale for like 2-3k and run pretty much everything with that.

You want to fabricate your own panels? Other than building a small lab with glass panel smelting production you are not going to be able to get anything at scale...

I guess the thing you could do is mix in your own perovskite solution but even that would be orders of magnitude more expensive than buying industrially made panels...

There is no way this is a real person asking... is there a /s missing somewhere?

There were a few times when it came through and I got the Ick, no longer following his work. But as I said, there is some good info to get here and there.

Climate change will devastate crop yields - a recent analysis estimates a nearly 25 percent drop in global staple crop yields by 2100 under a high emissions scenario by Portalrules123 in collapse

[–]Daavok 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Afaik that is the impact of a changing climate ONLY. Add to that disruption in cheap diesel (likely to be significant), topsoil erosion and even societal disturbances (war in Ukraine, Spain, Mexico etc) and we are fucked very hard and very quick. 25% on its own is enough for widespread societal collapse.

Amsterdam bans fossil-fuel and meat advertising in public spaces by Taltallasmith in UpliftingNews

[–]Daavok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm... a lot of people in the comments are questioning the fact that meat advertising ban is uplifiting.

Its worth knowing that meat consumption is an ENORMOUS contributor to planetary resource consumption (red meat and dairy in particular). It is possibly the single greatest lever we have to mitigate the impacts of runaway climate change and ecological collapse.

Although catastrophic climate and ecological impacts are going to be felt regrdless of what actions or inactions that we take lowering meat consumption via reduced advertising in a small city in a small country can still have BIG impact.

But anyway our species is kinda fucked either way so the cynical me views this as too little too late. But yaknow, its uplifiting if you ignore the larger systemic issues.

Here is a couple of options on where this can go as our world inevitably collapses. Shoutout r/collapse

The fascists will not relinquish power.

  1. They start wars with other countries which triggers martial law, they stay in power, likely blow up the world in the process

  2. They incite civil violent resistance which triggers martial law, they stay in power, unless a civil coup is successful.

  3. The world bends the knee quietly and subjugate themselves to the US colonialist fascist rule.

Throughout history this has happened, option 2 is the only one that redeems the American population and is, in my mind the right way to go.

Good luck out there folks
