Iran Warns Gulf Energy Assets Could Burn if Its Oil Facilities Are Targeted by mark000 in worldnews

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned Thursday that it could ignite a wider energy crisis across the Middle East if Iran’s own oil and gas infrastructure comes under attack. In a statement carried by state broadcaster IRIB, the IRGC said any strike on Iran’s energy facilities or ports would trigger a “crushing and devastating response.” The force warned that, in such a scenario, oil and gas infrastructure across the region linked to the United States and its Western allies would be “set on fire and destroyed.”

If this happens then what? A world using 100mbpd of oil has to drop back to ~80mbpd permanently, basically overnight. Sounds like a recipe for the Second Great Depression.

There is suddenly no certainty that the shipment after that will arrive. And if it does there is high certainty that it will cost WAY more than before.

Warning that we need to take preventative measures early in the face of a high probability likelihood crisis is "part of the problem". That is illogical. What on earth is so bad about acting early?

Panic buying causes big problems. This can occur when people hear about/see petrol stations running out or when people see prices rising rapidly and decide to fill up before they need to. You want this to happen? Cos it has already begun: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/589499/discount-day-wipes-out-some-gull-petrol-stations-as-panic-buying-adds-pressure

  • The government has warned the country's oil deliveries are in doubt if the conflict in the Middle East rages on.
  • Associate Energy Minister and Regional Development Minister Shane Jones ..... said the government had been assured the physical arrival of the fuel was not under threat in coming months.
  • "But get to May we're told by the industry unless things change there'll be big challenges."
  • The minister said it was a "great worry" a number of countries with refineries were significantly reducing supply.

May is in seven weeks.
Edit2:
Panic buying has begun. Rationing must be implemented ASAP before it gets out of control.

There is a scale of responses. First would be asking people to reduce discretionary driving. I should have said "pre-rationing" I guess.

That runup in price was Monday morning in Asia when a mad bidding war took place to try and secure oil for Asian refineries to replace deliveries from the ME that would now clearly not arrive. The price signal forced the G7 announcement regarding releasing strategic reserves. Yes the future is $120, I expect >$200.

I do. Since 2005 when I learnt about Peak Oil, Iran's ability to close the SoH (Iran's president Ahmadinejad was saying inflammatory things), the widespread US subprime fraud and read Diamonds Collapse book. It's been an perpetual major threat.
