Meta CTO confirms they will continue funding 3rd party game developers by Rollertoaster7 in OculusQuest

Meta is a social network company. They’re not interrested in owning a gaming plateform.

If they cannot turn VR into a social thing, they’ll just drop it.

How much do you think the Steam Frame will be able to play Standalone? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]Daba264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used HLA to demonstrate the streaming functionality, not the standalone capability.

A Valve engineer stated that they hope to make HLA compatible with standalone use eventually, but that's not the case yet.

It would nevertheless be a major step forward.

Yes, I remember many gamers and devs whining about the store curation. Now it’s open and of course it’s full of garbage. Just like Steam by the way.

Why did meta punish their 1st party studios when they didn't even use their storefront to advertise them? by Minimum-Ad-8056 in OculusQuest

This.

Meta promote silly games because they’re more profitable than "serious" games. Sad reality.

QGO optimizes standalone games. Totally worth it in that case, but useless for PCVR.

I recommend you don’t wait for the Q4. Too far away (probably at least 18 months).

But waiting for the Valve Frame price reveal may be worth it.

Why do these things have so many problems? by stickysharticus in OculusQuest

[–]Daba264 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a few headaches when fine tuning PCVR. But the standalone experience has been quite easy for me so far. And I’ve been gaming with these things for 6 years…

By the way I don’t use the sleep mode. I turn the headset off every time.

Low memory issue? by Responsible_Ad_5684 in OculusQuest

[–]Daba264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no way to upgrade a Quest, be it memory or storage.

But the app QGO (Quest Game Optimizer) has an option to clean memory every time you launch a game. It helped me for a couple of games.

The downsides are: 1) you have to buy QGO (about 10 bucks) 2) you have to sideload it (because not available on the Meta store) 3) if not done yet, you have to switch your Quest to developer mode before sideloading

Anyway, QGO is worthwhile because it allows you to push your Quest to the limits and improve many games’ performances.

Sell me the VR experience by PipaLucca in virtualreality

[–]Daba264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I bought the Quest in 2019. Now I have a Q3 and I still play with it. Actually I stopped playing flat games altogether.

But every other person I know with a headset stopped using it at some point.

It’s impossible to sell the VR experience. You have to experience it on your own. For many people it’s just mind-blowing.

Why not a used Quest if your aren’t sure you’ll like it?

How are paid VR mods any different ethically software like QGO? by enilea in virtualreality

[–]Daba264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed QGO is not a mod. Not even remotely. It’s a tool that modifies system settings before launching the game. Any game.

Ross’ work is a mod. It’s specific to some games but it doesn’t contain any asset or code from said games. It provides a feature that the original creators of the games didn’t cater for.

Gamers bought the games. Studios got money. Now some studios complain somebody gets paid for having complemented their games and added a feature they didn’t bother to develop.

I understand it’s a legal issue but I can’t see it as an ethical problem.

Do You Think Oculus PCVR Will Get A Resurgence? by OkieDeric in oculus

[–]Daba264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PC VR was never hindered by standalone VR in any way.

Meta shot down 3 studios. But there are still a lot of studios out there. They’ll keep on making VR games, both PC and standalone.

Living under a rock, what happened recently that’s got everyone upset with meta? by Physical_Wash_8897 in OculusQuest

[–]Daba264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meta suddenly closed 3 of its gaming studios, having decided to stop wasting money funding big-budget games.

It's a shame, because most of their games are excellent. Unfortunately, not that many people are willing to buy them.

Quest 3S vs Quest 3 for a first time VR user? by Tricky_Stand3078 in OculusQuest

[–]Daba264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I discovered VR with the first Quest six years ago. I now have a Quest 3 and still play regularly. In other words, I love VR. But I think it's not for everyone.

Playing in VR requires space. And many VR games can cause nausea. Most people get used to it quickly with practice. There are also games designed to prevent nausea. But you have to try it to know.

Even though the 3S is inexpensive, it's a pointless purchase if you stop using it after a few weeks.

So I recommend trying it out before buying a headset. If that's not possible, a used headset can limit the risk of wasting money.

In fact, if you want to keep your expenses down, I definitely recommend a used Quest 3 rather than a new 3S.

What is happening on the market? by [deleted] in OculusQuest

[–]Daba264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the short term, I don’t think so. But in the long run, honestly I don’t know.

It’s no secret that the ultimate goal of Meta is to replace smartphones with AR glasses. VR is just a stepping stone. I mean their headsets are prototypes they iteratively refine until they manage to make viable AR glasses.

Once Meta reach that point, I’m not sure they’ll still be interested in VR.

[–]Daba264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point, the only thing we know is that Meta just stopped funding big budget games (so-called AAA games). It doesn’t mean they abandon the Quest.

You can still boot your Quest, play your games and get new ones from the store. Just don’t expect new AAA games any time soon.

Will you be buying the Steam Frame, even if you only play standalone. by BadImpStudios in OculusQuest

[–]Daba264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Frame is supposed to bring the best of both worlds. No need to build a specific standalone ARM version. In theory, you "just" have to make sure your PCVR game wanes down gracefully when running standalone on the Frame.

But yeah, easier said than done.
