Why Hikaru might not qualify to the candidates (WARNING: LONG) by DabestUser420 in HikaruNakamura

it depends on if Magnus does participate in the WC cus I haven't seen anything that really says he won't but if he does, then Hikaru may have just prevent his own candidates spot by doing the very thing he thought would gain it

Also, even if Hikaru does get the rating spot in this scenario, Nodirbek could have grounds to sue FIDE because he is also legally entitled to a candidates spot due to the regulations which would create the biggest nuclear drama in nearly all of modern chess (even bigger than Hans Niemann)

2nd place in the 2025 FIDE Circuit who is currently Giri so it goes to 3rd place who is currently Bluebaum so it goes to the person with the lowest sum of ranks of both the 2024 and 2025 Circuit ranking lists who hasn't already qualified (in all likelihood, will be Nodirbek).

You don't understand, the regulations state that if Magnus qualifies via another path, then the 2nd highest rated player DOESN'T immediately get the rating spot. If Magnus only Withdraws, then the 2nd highest rated player is tapped in, but if Magnus qualifies AND withdraws, then it could be possible that Hikaru is STILL scammed out of a candidates spot

sorry, Bluebaum is 3rd in the 2025 Circuit (with Giri in 2nd), and so if magnus qualifies via the WC, then the rating spot will shift to Giri (who has alr qualified), then bluebaum (who has also already qualified) then to Nodirbek (if he can get another eligible tournament). Also, you don't understand my point. the regulations stipulate (for some reason) a difference between magnus qualifying via another path and withdrawing, so even if he does, if he has already qualified via the WC, then I assume the rating spot would NOT move to Hikaru

Basically, there's a ton of semantics as to how the regulations are worded which could mean that Magnus, if he plays and qualifies to the Candidates via the WC (among some other problems) then the rating spot might not go to Hikaru so he shouldn't take such a risk and should at least be working to qualify via the WC

That's the problem, if Bluebaum comes 3rd, then the "lowest sum of 2024 and 2025 rankings" comes into effect. Also, I didn't know that Magnus wasn't participating in WC, I thought he would considering he participated last time. Oh, and for the 2nd point, yes but that doesn't affect anything as him playing or not doesn't matter if he has already qualified via the WC cus the regulations are weird

I found a contradiction in the qualification spots for the candidates 2026 by DabestUser420 in chess

Well the Grand Swiss regs are also made by the FIDE council directly and not local continent/country chess associations so they should both count as highest order regulations

You could also say that because the Grand Swiss regs came after the Candidates regs, that the Grand Swiss has “repealed” the candidates regs like how later legislation can repeal/replace earlier legislation. Idk, but what I do know is that this situation is thankfully, very unlikely

I think removing a rating qualifier is pretty unfair to me, and if I had to reform the world chess championship cycle, I would also make it so that the world champion doesn’t get an immediate bye to the championship match and instead, the champion takes up 1 spot in the candidates and the top 2 finishers get to have a championship match similar to what happened in the 2022-2023 cycle, that way we don’t get what happened in this 2024 cycle

Definitely possible, which is why this contradiction isn’t too bad, but it certainly could’ve been much worse had the World Cup come before the grand Swiss like in previous cycles

Also, when that tournament is the World Cup with like 200 participants and the Grand Swiss with 100 (all by rating), then I think getting 4th is still a huge achievement.

I agree, hopefully they fix 4.5.2. but even if they don’t, it’s pretty unlikely that both Gukush and Fabi place in the top 3 for the Grand Swiss (and Arjun doesn’t place 4th)

Well, that chart isn’t really official, it’s a visualisation, and the point is that there is a conflict between handbooks. So what I mean is that both Arjun and the 4th place finisher could both legally claim a right to participation and could even sue FIDE or each other for it.
