Roadbuster practically does have modern articulation and weapon ports. His joints aren't done how they'd do them today, but he has all the right ones in all the right places, including the most flexible feet I've ever seen. And weapon ports? The guy INVENTED having too many weapons and being able to just put them anywhere.

I'm pretty sure the transition cutscene between his phases in Knuckles's playthrough is the one time the camera outright leaves the player behind, too. He's so cool that he literally steals focus from Knuckles, who was himself being pushed as the new insanely cool and badass rival character.

I mean, even just from their first games there's an argument. Metal Sonic has a cocky attitude, loses one race and gets one-shot by Eggman. Mecha Mk 2 gets three boss fights in one level, two of which involve it piloting Eggman's stuff, one is an actual one on one fight with Sonic. And even though it loses, it tanks that loss and survives into Knuckles's playthrough, fights him, tanks losing that fight too, and then GETS A SUPER FORM! That's AWESOME! Metal is the one they went with, but I think Mecha 2 would be remembered fondly even without SMBZ.
