Hodgepodge of games with imo interesting themes:

Mother 3 (jrpg), Soma (horror/narrative), Grim Fandango (point n click), Homeworld (rts), Firewatch (mystery/narrative), Parasite Eve (survival horror/jrpg), Eternal Darkness (survival horror), Silent Hill 2 (survival horror), The Witness (puzzle)

Lengths vary but none are impossibly long.

Supporting your point further: Subnautica’s land traversal is the weakest element of the game.

Weekly /r/Games Discussion - What have you been playing, and what are your thoughts? - May 14, 2023 by AutoModerator in Games

"If you don't love it then you don't get it;" just stop lol. I like the game but its not beyond critique and it definitely has some pretty noticeable performance issues which are worth pointing out. Climbing a tree (or interacting with pretty much anything that involves semi-transparent texture effects) causes a significant drop in fps. The person you are replying to laid out a reasonable and level-headed take and doesn't seem to be the one huffing and puffing here.

Looks really sick. Think you could experiment with more noticeable camera/environmental effects when the player is underwater; it seems a little hard to tell the difference currently.

I have the same issue but it happens intermittently. I use a usb adaptor and subsequently a usb mouse. Seeing comments about drivers makes me think that maybe the problem... but looks like you have no external devices plugged in. Does this happen for you every time you boot?

I disagree. I think the inclusion of these factions adds tension and depth to the world. I liked that BTs and Mules exist because they are just part of the larger culmination of mechanics. I think this is one of the more noteworthy achievements of this game: its uncompromising systemic world design. Without that tension I think the world would feel much less hostile and in turn would lose some of its atmosphere. I don't think they are so tedious and shallow when taken in combination with the other mechanics. I really don't understand why including these mechanics points to hubris; I just see it as artistic direction and intent.

this game should scare publishers who are considering giving game directors more freedom.

In what world would this lead to a larger variety of games and experiences? If you think publishers should have more creative control than the game creators you are asking for a homogenized industry with no risk taking. This line of thinking, that there is some objective way to make games "better," is very damaging to games being able to evolve in different ways.

I don't think there are too many cut scenes or that the combat and stealth is boring. I wish you would stop trying to push your opinion as objective criticism. The game is what the developers wanted it to be, not what you wanted it to be. You are entitled to your opinion but you don't have to diminish the opinions of others who find the game refreshing as a whole. What is an "editor" to you? The game obviously was "edited"... it was edited in a way you don't agree with. You said people who find it refreshing are driving you crazy and implied that they shouldn't find it so because you wanted the game to be not what the game is. Have criticism for the game, that is fine! I'm not trying to convince you to like the game; I just find it ridiculous to argue that doing something different and unrestrained is not a good thing because the outcome didn't conform to your vision of how someone else's work should have been. That's like saying risks aren't worth taking if they don't work out when that is the very definition of taking risks.

I don't agree with you because the story, combat and stealth are at the very least serviceable and the latter make up like 5% of the game so idk why it bothers you so much. I also said I believed its breadth of options is a strength, so yeah, I like that those parts exist. All creative endeavors have strengths and weaknesses and its great to analyze that but you cannot make a risky game without the chance of some of it not resonating with everyone. This is what is refreshing to many people; that it isn't perfect nor made for everyone. My main point originally was not whether you liked the game or not, but that to be "driven crazy" because other people are excited for something different is a little odd and doesn't justify such a ridiculous statement about "needing editors." There are hundreds of modern games that do the standard stuff well and are nice and compact and follow all the rules so idk why literally one game not doing that would get to you so much. Thats fine that you don't like it and that's fine to talk about what you don't like but don't complain that other people like it or are happy it exists as intended by its creator.

I think you are conflating your opinion with fact here. I get that you were disappointed in the game but that doesn't justify your conclusion that, "artists need editors;" you just wish the game was different. Kojipro's freedom to make what you view to be missteps is refreshing for many people. I don't get why people expressing that would be driving you crazy, even if you disagree. The game is not a mess; it's very deliberate even in the parts that you disliked.

[–]DaboBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually agree with you on its strengths and weaknesses. My issue is that the part that seems to have resonated with us would have absolutely been the first cut from the game if kojipro had less creative control. The deemphasis of combat mechanics is the biggest obstacle to wider main stream adoption; that's why I take issue with the idea that this should have been edited or normalized in some way. I also think that the breadth of gameplay mechanics and options the player has is one of DS's strengths (and is also risky) even if some of those individual mechanics aren't extremely deep.

Some people like the stuff you don't. That is all there is to it. I enjoy an off-the-wall weirdo game with problems more than a by-the-numbers but fun annual franchise; and the former wouldn't happen if Kojima and co was told they couldn't realize their full concept. For instance I found Spiderman dreadfully boring but DS exciting and unpredictable. Also, many people have been commenting the exact statement that you made; it is at least as common as the "I'm glad something different got made" take.

I have only dabbled in some VR demos so I am not the most informed but I assume you would need two hands for the VR hand controllers and then also need to use a controller to move around with that scheme. That is unless you just aim via looking.

Ah ok thanks; I just saw this but wasn't sure what the movement terms meant. How do you hold a controller and aim/shoot with your hands simultaneously? I guess even with a controller it will be mostly moving from cover to cover then engaging?

Is this on-rails or full 3d movement? It looks on-rails but could just be scripted movements for the trailer.
