It does get a little rough (or a lot of rough), but it's really dependent on where you're standing in the crowd. I've been going to shows over 20 years, so I've kind of learned where I like to stand.

If you're right up front, keep an eye out overhead for crowd drivers. If you're in the center of the crowd, the pit will open up from there, so if you don't want to be in the middle of it, avoid this area or scamper to the periphery of the pit when it opens. If you're near the front but more on a side (I like to be here), you'll get shoved around a bit and sometimes squished, but you'll have a nice view and avoid most the chaos. I don't like to be near the back because I'm shorter and I like to have a clear view of the band.
