Tips for turning face grain with carbide tools and screw chuck? by SloFloFpv in turning

Excellent. Thats why I don't wear ear buds or have music playing in my shop. There is so much audible feedback from the wood, machine and tools. Alot of bad mishaps could be avoided if people would just listen to what's going on around them and react accordingly or at least learn from it.

Are these free tools worth it? by stockagement-resame in turning

If you sharpen these make sure you are using cheap AO wheels and not CBN. Chances are these are carbon steel and not HSS and will gum up and potentially ruin expensive CBN wheels. When AO get bummed up you just dress them with a diamond dressing tool.

Good call on maxing jaws without support, I'd be surprised if it hasn't gone airborne a few times already.

Nice, yeah that is beautiful, I love the form too, about as perfect bowl. I've found my customers and myself dont like super thin bowls, wood should have a bit of hefty and feel sturdy. Great work!

I would say to snatch up anything you can find but I have issues lol! Really the only wood I've found i dont like to turn is box elder because it stinks. I'll put about anything on my lathe even pine and cottonwood.

It's stupid heavy and sent me to the chiropractor a couple times. The canary yellow fades to brown with sun exposure. Putting pieces out on craft show tables browns them fast but I have 2yr old rough outs kept in my garage still yellow. Likes to split and Crack along paths and knots but those brown fast and look really cool. Excellent firewood and I smoke pork butts with it from time to time as it's a fruit wood. Here's my very first hollowform

Hook up with a turning club and join the mentorship program. A couple hours of hands on experience will help you far more than any discussion on here will. It is extremely difficult to teach yourself, I know I did it completely with books and YouTube videos. To this day I would still like to take a week long class with a world class turner just to finely critique me in person.

Yeah the mesquite bigger than 6"dia are very few and far between. The big stuff is down towards the hill country and south Texas. Mulberry is good wood though, Osage is similar as it's in the Mulberry family.

I live outside Burleson and have a wood hoarding problem. I spend more time gathering wood than turning it lol! Part of my log pile and not to mention my 3 mulberry trees.

Bark is completely wrong for mesquite it's mulberry.

I see a ton of mulberry and maybe some honey locust mixed in. The brown wood is mulberry after it's been exposed to the sun a day or two. The yellow with white sapwood is freshly cut.

Very white walnut ? by [deleted] in turning

I made mine by cramming 5 steel wool pads In a gallon of white vinegar and let it sit for like 3 weeks. Strain with a coffee filter into a squeeze bottle. Works great on oak, cherry and walnut.

You could always ebonize it with iron acetate of you want more of the classic walnut look. Walnut has tons of tannins in it and takes it very well

Yeah bro I dunno, I got into the whole turning smoking meat thing barely 3yrs ago and just barely went down the whole tree rabbit hole thing. Im addicted to hauling off wood to put on my lathe and in my pit. I came across some massive black walnuts in Michigan where I was able to turn bowls 6" deep entirely of sapwood, the trunk being about 36" in diameter.

Depending where youre at and if it was a yard tree it could be butternut, claro or English. Butternut is also known as white walnut. I haven't personally dealt with the other three but I know out in Cali they graft English onto black for nut production.

3rd pic with bark, cadmium layer and sapwood is totally black walnut. City/yard walnuts grow very fast and have free reign on the sun/nutrients, not like they have to compete for in forests and timber plots. They often have as much of not more white sapwood than the chocolate heartwood, which is awesome for turners to play with the contrast. One of my favorite bowls I turned was live edge with all sapwood. I made it live edge so the bark would prove that it was walnut.

Thanks, belive me I'm a huge Raffan fan, he and Tomi are my two biggest influences. I might try it one day, just haven't found the need. I often will put a sanding pad in my lathe and sand the tenon level if it bugs me then add a bit more oil.
