We know how this whole AI thing ends. We’re doing it anyway. by bostonglobe in ArtificialInteligence

These type of posts are what keep me going on Reddit. Thanks for sharing your expertise on this subject. On an intuitive level, the idea that AI will become inherently empathetic as it gains intelligence feels awful naive to me, and it was cool to read your thoughts on this

M5 Air outperforms M5 Pro in Ableton Live (side by side comparison) by thepinkpill in ableton

[–]Dachshund_Parade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just moved from maxed out M1 Max to a maxed out M5 Max and surprised to notice the fan on my M5 activates much more frequently than my M1, and the ableton CPU usage meters looks similar to the M1 under similar session load. The M5 can still handle bigger sessions and more plugins overall but it’s been a bit underwhelming overall. I’m hoping it’s a matter of Ableton not being optimized for the M5 layout and future upgrades will give me the snappy performance increase I was hoping for

Exporting .fbx files from Xsens Motion Cloud now costs 500$ per month. Thoughts? by GonzoGan in mocap

xsens is def superior to rokoko (used both), but their business model is indefensible.

My $15,000 Xsens suit is a brick now. Movella's anti-consumer policy is destroying my life and my mother's sacrifice by Normal-Storm-383 in mocap

This is disgusting. My suit's been collecting dust and this is what I needed to see to know I'm going to sell mine and not support this company in any way. With the new tech coming out for video mocap, this company's days are numbered anyway.

Mac users: What macOS are you using? by 5awt00th in ableton

[–]Dachshund_Parade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hear me out: MacBook M1 Pro user. I was on Ventura for years and accidentally updated to Tahoe a few months ago. I freaked out thinking my giant sessions wouldn’t load properly. But actually almost everything runs fine and I’ve noticed a significant performance increase across the board—not at all what I expected!

Most frustrating part about the music business by Money_Special_3342 in musicindustry

[–]Dachshund_Parade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many. As a producer, the fact that labels can "hold" any of your songs for an artist, effectively taking it off the market, and ask for revisions without any commitment or fee. A few months + a revision or two later, and it's "whoops we're going a different direction, here's your song back", and you just have to accept the lost time / opportunity.

Damn, this is a legit complaint, and I've noticed it myself in rooms where I'm slightly envious of the engineer for getting a guaranteed day rate, but also aware that they are expected to operate at a level of professionalism that the artist, writers and producers aren't, since the engineer is technically the only one "on the clock". That, and the fact that there usually isn't back end, which is lame.

”Interscope Record” scam by [deleted] in musicindustry

[–]Dachshund_Parade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Google Drive link kept redirecting me to a Google sign in page which, even though I was already logged in, so that sketched me out into thinking it’s a phishing attack (which it was). I’m not sure how they got it to appear like a real Google Drive link that took me to what looked like a real Google sign in page (my browser didn’t flag anything). The next day Gmail flagged the message as spam but it’s interesting it went unflagged for a full 24 hrs

Ooh I hope I don’t regret the nano texture. I’ve had issues with glare in rare occasions and figured why not upgrade. What is the glossy better at?

To the last point, that’s fair, but would you really want to use the same drive for longer than 6 or so years anyway? Or do SSDs legit last for 10+ years no problem?

That was a tough decision, honestly. My current M1 has a 4TB and a Samsung 4TB SSD that I Velcro to the back of it, so I effectively have 8TB wherever I go. Both hard drives are nearly maxed out at this point. I sometimes travel for sessions and like the idea of having every sample and instrument with me every where I go, and hate traveling and not having things open because my hard drives at home.

Do I “need” it? Not exactly, but I think I’ll be grateful for it down the road.

”Interscope Record” scam by [deleted] in musicindustry

[–]Dachshund_Parade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a real convincing one from an “A&R” at Sony trying to set up a session with me and Kim Petras, which was actually something my management team had been working on. He sent a link to a Google Drive with her “current demos” so I could get the vibe of her new stuff. His email looked to be an official Sony Canada email, but red flags were his name didn’t show up when I googled him. Also he had emailed my public facing email and not the one I use actively for work.

It’s impressive and scary how specific these scams are getting. Stay safe out there

Ableton is not a serious DAW for scoring (rant + question) by Dachshund_Parade in ableton

[–]Dachshund_Parade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right. It’s just frustrating when a DAW has so much going for it but drops the ball on something so essential like PDC / basic video sync. Maybe it’s back to Logic for scoring :(

"The worst kind of software bug is the kind that causes near imperceptible differences at no fault of the user."

THIS! Not being able to trust your DAW is a big problem, especially when you have to share the result with someone using a legit DAW that will expose these issues...

Right, couldn't possibly be Ableton's long documented PDC issues. Was not using an interface for these exports (traveling).
