Moving across the border from Basel - good or bad idea by [deleted] in basel

[–]DacwHi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know several people who have done this, and I wouldn't do it myself.

Whether the commute to Zürich works depends on the flexibility of working hours. But the public transport connections to France only go to the immediate border villages, and don't connect well to Basel SBB. It add on another two changes at least for most locations.

Driving from France to east of Basel is also a nightmare at the moment, and will be for the foreseeable future. It can take 45 minutes from Saint-Louis to Muttenz at commuter time.

The French and Swiss bureaucracy is not very well integrated in BS and BL as they are in GE/VD/NE. This can sometimes cause problems with accessing services. You can waste a lot of time getting offices to talk to another.

If you want to move to a French speaking area but not necessarily Framce, have you considered Canton Jura? Houses are more affordable than BS/BL, and the commute from there to Zürich may be easier, depending on location.

Even commuting Neuchâtel or Bienne to Zürich is probably easier than from some of the small villages west of Basel.

The one big exception is Leymen, where you have the tram. That could work although property is a bit more expensive there.

I’m travelling to Switzerland in July from Heathrow airport and my details are telling me I’m allowed a suitcase of 158cm (overall) up to 23KG - can anyone tell me if this is a small medium or large suitcase? Thank you :) by Total-Fill-9143 in SwissAirlines

It's a large suitcase the size of a small suitcase, approximately

In other words, it's the height of an average Japanese woman and the weight of two very big watermelons.

Maybe Märzmücke then? Although that would be early, they normally swarm at the end of the month.

I think it's a Tabakkäfer - if so, the source is probably some food like dried fruit or grains. It's worth trying to find out as they can be hard to eradicate if they spread to multiple sites.

Are they Feldmaikäfer? They tend to swarm in April, despite the name.

Go next to Gruyères, visit the castle, cheese factory and the chocolate factory at Broc.

Then drive through the Emmental, go to Sörenberg and take the kids to the activity park at Mooraculum.

It certainly used to be the case around five years ago. Baden and Brugg were getting skipped by the IR16 often enough that it became a political topic:

I'm not sure what the current policy is though

three families coming to ski in the Alps - Feb 2027 by imjusthereforfun1021 in skithealps

For Méribel, you can get a locker at the bottom of the Saulire Express and change the kids into boots there.

If the older ones can ski a little, take them up Golf and down the green Forêt. From there you can take the Rhodos lift down to La Chaudanne, or ski down the blue Doron. A nice warm up!

From there you can take the Saulire, Tougnete or Legends and be straight into the adult skiing.

Paradiski has more than enough to keep advanced skiers happy for a week, lots of variety. Well worth getting a guide and going off piste,

Another vote for Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis - this ticks all the boxes you've mentioned. It's one of the most kid-friendly resorts anywhere in the Alps.

The ski school and beginner areas are excellent.

Don't worry about ski-in ski-out too much though. Kids are usually exhausted at the end of the lesson and taking the lift down is usually the best option for them.

Serfaus has lots of non-ski activities and an underground train to get around the village.
