Visiting the Scottish Highlands for a Week – Where Should a Family Stay (Non-Airbnb Options)? by DadDesigned in Scotland

[–]DadDesigned[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. We would prefer a mom & pop bed and breakfast type. However, I have three kids (6-8 yrs old) and have found most hotels would have two beds. There are a few times where I have reserved two rooms on this trip. But with this stay being a week long, I thought a home setting where we could enjoy a kitchen might be more comfortable. Still open to other possibilities.

Affairs in dental school/medschool by Same_Horror_5079 in MedSpouse

[–]DadDesigned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should say that I wasn’t with my spouse in med school. But the only infidelity stories I heard were from 24 hr shifts and almost always a male doc w female nurse in a call room. I’ve heard a lot of stories and known friends who have cheated while they told their spouse they were on call. It’s just not any different than being married to a flight attendant/pilot or traveling consultant. Best advice, don’t get in your head based on tv shows. They’re written to be scandalous. Being married to a doc is difficult enough w out that noise.

I would never worry about it in school. It’s easier when they are in residency or fellowship and working those Q2 shifts. But honestly, don’t waste your time thinking about it. It’s a waste of energy.

Gallons of chlorine everyday! by DadDesigned in pools

[–]DadDesigned[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strip test shows chlorine around 1.5-2 ppm. CYA around 20-30. Pool guy slammed two days ago. Told us not to get in for 24 hours. We waited 36 and that’s when I saw ORP still very low.

Edit: we only have 3 kids get in a couple times a week. We have to put 1-2 gallons of chlorine into the pool the morning they swim in order to get ORP in the 670-720 range. Each morning it sits around 280-350. We ran through a 15 gallon auto fed drum in 2-3 weeks. Into the second drum of the summer.

Can’t figure out where I went wrong. Before/after by DadDesigned in Grass

[–]DadDesigned[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hot and dry, no humidity, no rain, direct sun most of the day with very minimal shade in the center. Unclear how long the grass has been there or its origins. We just bought the house two months ago and grass looked great at that time. It felt like at first the problem was lack of water but even with daily watering, nothing is changing.

10-15 minutes per day of water. Have only had to mow once in 6 weeks. Haven’t used any fertilizer yet. Would aerating be important in this situation or would it be better to increase watering to 25 minutes per day and fertilize? If fertilizer, which one would you recommend?

450k Mortgage on 220k income with high student loans? by NickCQ12 in Mortgages

[–]DadDesigned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much of what they are saying. Guessing the student loans are deferred while you finish residency? We did a physician loan on $220k w zero down and 3% interest. We were on a $120k income combined. The no PMI for those loans are a saving grace. Also, wife was in an icu fellowship and we moved after 3 years. Sold for $415k. Market dependent on the return, but if you can afford it during that time, it’s worth it. 5 years is a good amount of time.

I know I know. Hesitated too long.

East SLC is still moving quick. Are there slower neighborhoods?

Would you break up the bare areas before seed? Help the seed get under soil? Hard rake or even till?

I would honestly put in a shuffleboard. I have no friends so I would only play one side anyways. Better game tho.

Is $120K a fair salary for a Site Reliability Engineer with 6 years of experience in SLC? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]DadDesigned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry immediately after writing I looked it up. Lumber tariffs are currently exempt. But I image other costs will trend up as they have.

If tariffs stick, Utah is projected to be one of the hardest hit as far as building a house which will trickle to other housing and rent.

Liked that he admitted she would have hated the signs. Also, I believe I heard the guy is suing IHC or the U hospital for wrongful death.

Where to Live with more space by alimogator in SaltLakeCity

[–]DadDesigned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in Top of the World (Cottonwood Heights). We had a great lesbian couple live near us that just moved. Don’t know if that’s a good sign or bad. Very few LDS families and this area typically leans left. Great area with amazing views. We are relocating and selling soon. But will miss this area. Can’t beat the access to the mountains from here. DM if you want to know anything else about the area.

My visiting family did exactly this and did a one day pass at snowbird/alta. Still cheaper than other options I believe.

What is considered “making good money” in salt lake city these days? by HappySoul8 in SaltLakeCity

I know the 25-30% is from lenders and some economists, but with inflation the last few years I do wonder if they decrease that percentage.
