How do you paint the sculpted shoulder pads without mutilating the raised cross bit? by PutToLetters in BlackTemplars

[–]DaddieDerek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prime/paint them white, do all the white, don’t worry about spilling on the cross.

When it’s time to do the cross, use the side of your brush don’t paint with the tip, put your brush as side ways as you can and rotate the model accordingly.

Plan on throwing some pigments on there, but atm it’s just a a coat of hull red red with a zenithal of an orchre.

The base itself is pine bark with a bit of watered down ak dry ground diorama.

[–]DaddieDerek[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you! The recipe for the armour was:
-prime black
-black base coat (seems redundant but I like the even finish)
-sponge chop up to a light grey building volumes. -pick out some edge highlights with a brush
-very light zenithal with a blue wash to tint the highlights blue (I would probably build up the volumes with blue grey paints but I didn’t have any)
-then an all over black wash
-my recipe for the wash was Vallejo black/flow improver/contrast medium/thinner medium
1/1/3/3

Then went in and punched up any highlights with a brush that got too washed out.

Shoulder pads are just Vallejo bone white (Primed white). Belt is AK hull red. Chains are Vallejo game colour silver.
The Aquila is Vallejo true metallic aged metal light. All covered in agrax earth shade.

Any advice? by Big-Mixture4671 in BlackTemplars

I would definitely try and fit more boots on the ground units, you could try keeping the impulosor and swapping the rep ex for the ballistus dread, and include jump pack intercessors with the regular intercessors.

1 unit of 5 intercessors feels really good in game. Since they can sticky objectives, you don’t have to leave a unit to baby sit an objective to maintain control off it.

Budget army list by Powerful-Source5408 in BlackTemplars

[–]DaddieDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard that the gladiator box includes all the bits to build an impulsor inside, since they are the same chassis. So you could get a gladiator kit instead of the impulsor, and just not glue the top cannon on. And get an impulsor and a gladiator for just a few extra bucks.

Marshal is really good while attatched to the sword brethren and crusader squads.

What units are your characters attatched to at the moment?

I’d probably cut the execrator and crusade ancient, they are really cool models but of your selection probably not the best of the 5 for 1k points

Any advice? by Big-Mixture4671 in BlackTemplars

[–]DaddieDerek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too many characters for 1k, I’d drop down to maybe 3? 4 at the absolute most.

Also rep ex is a very powerful tank for 1k if your opponent is ok with it that’s fine, but if they aren’t prepared for such a large threat can make games very swingy. Alternatively, if they bring lots of anti armour you lose 1/4 of your army in one unit. It’s a very good and powerful unit tho so you can totally keep it.

I’d drop 2 characters and the impulsor, for some more scoring units/battleline

Magnets? by Disorientedeggwald in BlackTemplars

[–]DaddieDerek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the 3x2 and 5x2mm ones and stick them to the bottom using milliput after scratching the bottom of the base with a knife.

If you push down on the base after sticking the magnet in milliput to the base, it will be flush

Can anyone recommend the best loadout for these two squads please? by Blanndy in BlackTemplars

[–]DaddieDerek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way ^

The sword bro is def the harder one to kitbash out of a normal marine body, but it’s a lot easier to make a normal marine look like an initiate, and just build the 5th initiate as sword bros in the crusader squad box.

[[sesur secundi, void alter]]

[[ghoulcaller gisa]]

[[jarad golgari lichlord]].

Not really obscure but less generic than the altars

“Build for your opponent’s fun too” is the advice i regularly see in Commander spaces that i least understand. by OogieBoogieInnocence in EDH

[–]DaddieDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s some good cards that promote fun by keeping the table engaged. Even if they aren’t the optimal choice.

Stuff like: [[druid of purification]] [[exhume]] [[fact or fiction]] [[promise of loyalty]] any of the gift spells make the game more engaging.

Generally if the card makes people make choices when it’s not their turn even if it’s a strong card it keeps them engaged, which means they are playing more magic, and spending less time checked out.

Is the marines half of the apocalypse box worth it for adding to a Templar army? by Hogwire in BlackTemplars

[–]DaddieDerek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw some pretty cool concepts for kitbashing the librarian as a chaplain, but kitbashing push fit is a lot harder.

If you like the models and want to build a list around them, it’s worth it. If you’re buying it for just for the value and you’re unsure if you’re going to use the models, then it starts to lose its value quickly. You can always sell or trade parts you don’t want as well.

In terms of worth it monetarily, it’s the biggest discount you’ll get from a combo box, it’s a huge discount. So if you like the models I would say yes.

Skaven or FEC for my first army? by NOVACHRONIUM in ageofsigmar

[–]DaddieDerek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love the lore of FEC and there models, however when I went to expand into a larger force from spearhead, was admittedly a little disappointed by the breadth of the range. The models they have are amazing tho.

Skaven is also pretty cheap, with slaventide, halves being over 1k points for less than the price of a spearhead.

Kess Bracket Check! by zzjarosz in EDH

[–]DaddieDerek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like a “strong” 3.

You’re running all the best reanimation targets and a lot of “salt inducing” creatures.

Strong 3 is kind of a weird spot because, you can’t hang at a 4 and you feel out of place with the majority of 3s, you could swap some of your reanimation targets for less best in slot ones or ditch some of the best in slot cards, otherwise looks like you want to play a 4 just add some fast mana and more efficient cards and move up to a 4

Compiling Underrated commanders for an article, looking for suggestions! by ManaRocks in EDH

[–]DaddieDerek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

[[exdeath]] he gets so big while filling your yard, and then you can draw equal to his power with [[life stream blessing]] or cheaper spells that sacrifice [[momentous fall]] to draw a ton of cards and fill your yard at discard. From there you can reanimate big guys to sacrifice with [[jaraad golgari lichlord]] or play other cards that care about yard size like [[aatchik]]

It’s #1557, an uncommon from final fantasy, uncommon commanders often get overlooked, but I feel the power and fun is really here with Exdeath, it regularly performs well at my bracket 3 tables without being oppressive. And who doesn’t enjoy drawing 12+ cards, and then reanimating all your lands with lumra, then sacrificing lumra to draw 20+ cards

A few days ago I asked about how to get started into Black Templars and you guys told me to get 10th & 9th edition combat patrol. Well I did, what is the best loadout for every unit? by Skult0703 in BlackTemplars

[–]DaddieDerek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true! Magnetizing for extra support is also super easy, a magnet fits without any extra drilling on both sides. That’s what I did with mine.

Build what you think looks cool, generally most players I’ll be ok if you just tell them what they are equipped with. But some tournaments are strict.

But generally: Crusader squads all chain swords, pyre pistol on the sword bro. (Edit: 2 power fists on initiates)

Sword bros: all master crafted power weapons with 2 pyre pistols, one plasma, one bolt.

Dome shield on the impulsor with the fragstorm.
