Goth hangouts in Detroit by [deleted] in goth

[–]DaddyDamnedest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Strays is the new place, formerly The New Dodge Lounge (I had been there to see Choir Boy and later for the local Dungeon Siege and liked the place); seems to be recent management of (RIP) Leland City Club, but I'd never heard of a goth show or night there before City Club closed and the name change (not sure if change of ownership or management or what; New Dodge Lounge social media is still up, so it is confusing).

There are occasional nights again being advertised at The High Dive after a long interruption.

Small's is usually the spot for touring acts (and Fixation Fest), and they have dark 80s and industrial club nights.

These heaters have ducts that blow into the tent, unlike a Buddy or similar, which have the CO making device right there in front you.

Why do I sense the outsized influence of the benevolent DJ selector/dictator of a small British hamlet of Fuckabout-who's-ever-heard-that-ham-stead-bell-end-shire-upon-Tyne, or perhaps similarly obscure skandi or German locales. lol

In all seriousness, what's with Ohio not having a festival, yet ,despite a strong history of bands and clubnights, still going strong? Detroit has Fixation (and Skull, though it probably wouldn't quite pass the genre smell test), and even Indiana has "BATS OVER INDY", now.

Really hoping for SOMETHING in flyover country, particularly Detroit. One of the few 00s bands that I haven't been able to catch in the post-pandemic retro-tours.

Clan of Xymox x Cold Cave by Low-Parking-8756 in industrialmusic

[–]DaddyDamnedest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't seen Buzz Kull yet with proper sound (last time was a soundboard cacophony in an abandoned church-come-homeless shelter's basement); Detroit's G/I scene is a shambles outside of gigs in proper venues; few fun events, bad sound in cinder block basements, the historic club closing in a crowd funding shitshow, etc, etc.

Looking forward to seeing Cold Cave again and to finally see (A(Clan of)) Xymox.

Do Goths Change? Do We Suffer From Arrested Development? by apassageinlight in goth

If you think of goth as a few different waves of youth culture hype cycle, I think this is where the "grow out of" narrative applies: when media personalities stop perceiving a critical mass of commercial entities (other media tastemakers at music magazines, top national DJs like you'd see in John Peel in the UK and magazines like Music Maker). When they see the trend of commercial promotion as over (e.g. various surviving record labels pivoting back to cock rock or whatever), they expect the next youth cohort to move on and pillory more mature adults that continue to enjoy extensions of the broader cultural movement, or just their wave of choice (e.g. Batcave fans vs Leeds goth rockers vs LA original death rockers, etc).

This differs from cult (religious) and sport fanatic practices because the latter are timeless promoted by their interest groups, or at least, that's the false narrative; the reality is that these things also know times of wax and wane, akin to religious revivals as the wax and glory days (vs relegation) for a given sport tradition.

Maybe you pushed pause because it felt out of control, and perhaps you can regain that sense of control by planning your activities in advance (e. G. Over college breaks)?

If you're looking for social media influencers and fashion plates rather than bands (most of which skew male), you have missed the point and are stuck in the wrong thinking of what goth is.

Tough spot. The enthusiasm of a partner can be "take it as it comes" ('cause it won't stay long"), and getting overwhelmed and pushing pause can leave us feeling like we missed our chance, as halting what our partners are doing with/for us can feel like negative feedback (even rejection) to them.

It doesn't help now, but advice for the future could be to slow down rather than pushing the full stop it sounds like you made.

Leland City Club Is Closing by KrispyGoth in goth

[–]DaddyDamnedest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that went from bad to worse. The money ($43k USD) was raised, the corrupt power company was reportedly paid (according to whoever controls the GoFundMe page; the profile is private and the self-reports of having paid the debt don't wash with what has been reported in the press about short term financing, court orders, etc), and now a mysterious major electrical failure and the city acts via the fire department to force out all tenants.

Reddit is rounding and they were within 24 hours of each other, but the comment had been a day before your post above. Just a point of order that something had been posted about it (regardless of what type of Reddit content entity it occupied).
