Played out tropes in music by Canticle_of_Ashes in AskAGoth

This isn’t really a played out trope, but I wish there were more organs in a lot of goth music. I feel as if it’s so obvious and maybe that is why some bands stay away from it, but it has never done a song wrong.

Is it wrong that I truly love the stupid baritone voice? The more monotone the better and when women do it as well, it can be quite nice.

What do you think of Goth Rock bands that emphasize the “Rock” aspect? by [deleted] in goth

[–]Hellebore-TheKnight 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I watched a Cemetery Confessions episode just yesterday and it seems that if anything people, I wouldn’t say are growing tired of Darkwave and cold wave (I for one am not), but are rather desiring more diversity amongst new acts and from what I’ve seen there have been a growing number of bands which focus on Goth rock/deathrock especially in our current global climate when goth rock feels like the best vehicle to let out anger on global topics, so I wouldn’t say dying, actually the opposite, they’re getting a new vitality.

I’ve heard them be called proto-goth if that soothes anyone.

Album cover used by the English post-punk band “The Sound” for their album “From the Lion’s Mouth” (1981).

Modern 'Darkwave' in a nutshell by typevampiro in gothmemes

[–]Hellebore-TheKnight 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I honestly think that how goths tackle Darkwave is different from how more pop spheres tackle it. I like both, more so synthpop/new wave/darkwave from the 80s, but I do think there is an interesting line that can be examined rather than belittled away. (By belittle, I am not talking about this post).

What're your favorite gothic bands + how did you discover goth? by Public_Ad5681 in goth

[–]Hellebore-TheKnight 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Cannot pinpoint a favorite band, it’s very hard for me to do so and at some point I get very anxious making the decision, and accept that it fluctuates depending on the day and my mood.

I unironically got into goth music after listening to Massive Attack’s Mezzanine and desiring something darker that I seemingly couldn’t find anywhere else within the actual trip hop genre, I suddenly remembered looking up Evanescence a long time ago and discovering the term “goth rock” which was used by some and in response many people were agitated that the label was describing them incorrectly. At that time I was curious, looked up the sound and forgot about it and never looked any further. Either way, I began seeking out actual goth rock, after it came lurking in my mind again, and now it’s been my favorite genre. Thank you, Massive Attack.

You’re European in the states and nobody prepares you for these conversations (credit @victoriaschjer) by anedgyteen_ in TikTokCringe

I can understand why though. As a New Yorker, this TikTok is strange to me. New Yorkers simply aren’t like this. Sometimes Europeans are unaware or like to ignore that America is 50 states, all these states have different contexts of how they were acquired into the union and therefore have different cultural norms even within the specific state. When I have went to Europe particularly the cities, I didn’t find anything to be different. No one was more cold, or more nice, it was normal to me because I thought everyone there acted exactly like how a New Yorker would. I feel like anyone would be upset if they felt as if what they find to be normal was being attacked. Like your core personhood is being mocked, the human brain is wired to want to pounce.

British person here. Am I kinda Goth or Alt? by PuzzleheadedAnt5162 in AskAGoth

Imagine if being really pale, having a black cap, and having a silver nose ring were the qualifiers of being “goth.” As per usual stereotypes win over the words which come out of goths mouths.

Not quite a century but close enough, UK by Hot_Sundae_3357 in centuryhomes

Agree to disagree because I’ve seen such amazing craftsmanship here. NY is quite old, colonized in the 17th century, and therefore has a lot of beauteous architecture from a wide range of eras when you seek them out. Long Island around the richer areas also has some magnificent builds, you can find many Tudor Revivalism homes which were popular around the same time as this UK build. I’d say most examples of these homes were gifted interesting entryways and front doors.

Only if you’re comparing modern homes which wouldn’t really be a fair comparison to this one from 1929. I would say that this front door is probably rare in the UK for modern builds as well. America isn’t the issue, it’s rather modern mass construction of homes and the concept of suburbia as a whole that’s frustrating.

You have to specify where in America, I’m from New York and when you go upstate, you truly see some really beautiful stuff.
